Saturday 20th November 1943
Football League South
Southampton 2 (Whittingham 2) Crystal Palace 2 (Robson, Smith)
Gate: c 7,000
Palace finished 5th in this 30-match league season, while their hosts ended in 13th place and their goalscorer & skipper A Whittingham scored 19 goals in 28 games.
Palace scorer Albert Robson was one of those guys who played so much war-time football you have to wonder what he did for the war effort. It might have been plenty but he would have had to fit it in around 189 war-time games for Palace, and grabbing 116 goals. Making his debut in Dec 1936, he played 88 peace-time games either side of WW2, ending with his last in March 1948, and scoring 23 goals in those matches. So in all his 139 goals would make him the club's second-highest goalscorer ever, if only we counted war-time games. Here he is in 1938/9.

Wolves 1 Derby 3 (Nicholas 2 (1 pen), Bivens)
att: 6,000

Early start on a Sunday morning down by the docks for this rather obscure friendly.
Kingsbridge Athletic v Sir John Barleycorn
Is that ground still on the go or has it been built over?

Saturday 21st November 1953
FA Cup 1st round
Great Yarmouth Town 1 Crystal Palace 0
Gate: 8,944
The second of three consecutive losses in the FA Cup by Palace to non-league opposition. GYT were top of the Eastern Counties League (which also hosted the A sides of Arsenal, Spurs, West Ham & Norwich) so were no mugs, but even so a loss to Amateurs is always humiliating. And Palace ended up 22nd of 24 in Div IIIS so in fact weren't an awful lot higher in the big scheme of things. Below is action from the game, showing that beautiful old stand which still stands in their home Wellesley Rec ground. Worth a visit, I would suggest. They are currently in the ECL Div 1 North.
Shot shows a Palace attack. Apparently the home keeper (Canning), fumbling here under not a lot of pressure, was MOM, but who cares? GYT won and were rewarded with a 2nd round trip to Barrow (who won 5-2). The 8,944 gate was, and I believe still is, the ground record.

21 November 1931
Football League First Division
Middlesbrough v Portsmouth
A very long journey north for Portsmouth was rewarded with a 1 - 0 win. At the end of the season Portsmouth finished 12th in the League and Boro finished in 18th place.

21/11/59 Division One
WBA 2 Man City 0
A good season for the Baggies who finished in 4th position, but City only survived relegation by three points after scrambling clear with four wins in their last six matches.

The original owner must have liked to keep his records handy (though the club records have the attendance as 19,541).
This defeat was the end for manager Stuart McMillan who had led the club to their FA Cup success in 1946. He was replaced by Jack Barker but he couldn't stop the club sliding into Division 3 by 1955.
On the same day, the reserves beat Sheffield Wednesday 5-2.

Following Pete’s example earlier of an FA Cup tie with a giant killing:
21 November 1953
Walthamstow Avenue v Gillingham
A one nil win gave Walthamstow a second round tie v Ipswich

Saturday 22nd November 1969
Division I
Crystal Palace 2 (Dawkins 2), Wolverhampton Wanderers 1 (Sewell og)
Gate:- 23,585
Trevor Dawkins, scorer of both goals, including one brilliant bender from a free kick that completely bamboozled Phil Parkes. Dawkins was ex-West Ham, a skilful but lightweight midfielder who in his whole career managed just 35 games and this match yielded 2/3 of his career goals. But here he gave Palace 2 vital points and one of only 6 wins in the whole season as they just stayed up in their 1st division debut.
Action from the game as Bertie Lutton, the Wolves #9, just misses a low cross as John McCormick looks anxiously across the 6 yard box. Most of the 23,585 were pretty anxious, to be honest, including the 13 year old who's responsible for those team changes. This was a rare win and for the only time in his very brief career, Dawkins was the talk of the town and playgrounds in South London for a good few days thereafter. I scuffed a perfectly good pair of shoes trying that free kick with a tennis ball.

22 November 1947
Division 3 North
New Brighton v Rotherham United
Rotherham went away with the points after a 2 - 1 win.
Also in Division 3 North:
Halifax Town v Gateshead
This match ended 0 - 0
On the same day:
Division 3 North
Accrington Stanley v Chester City
The score was 1 - 0 to Accrington
It was a trip to the seaside for Carlisle who went home with the points after a 4 - 0 win.
Division 3 North
Southport v Carlisle United
Meanwhile... at Brunton Park
Carlisle Reserves v Consett
All of the above programmes have their own character; unlike modern day issues.
To finish off here is one from 5 years later in Scottish Division A
22 November 1952
Aberdeen v Falkirk
Aberdeen had very striking cover designs through the late 40s and 1950s. I like the simplicity of this one. |

22/11/81 Charity Match
Apart from the fact that both teams came from Sussex, the only thing I can add is that the recipients of the proceeds, Gifford House, is a Worthing based home for veterans.

Trio of old(ish) non-league issues.
Not sure of any of the scorelines, I'm afraid.

Bedford Avenue v Hounslow Town (Corinthian Lge)
Also 73 years ago
Lancing Athletic v Tooting & Mitcham (FA Amateur Cup)
Tavistock v Plymouth Argyle (Devon Senior Cup)
I like the sound of the Cosy Cafe for a cuppa after the match.

Monday 23rd November 1959 (61 years ago today)
Floodlit Friendly
Crystal Palace 4 (Sexton 2, Easton, Gavin), Sutton United 2
Single sheet prog for a floodlit friendly against our near neighbours and the borough where I now live. Palace put out a decent side and 29-year old Dave Sexton was among them, scoring twice here and hitting 11 goals in just 27 games for Palace, his last pro club before his stellar coaching and managerial career began. Started off at Luton in 1951 but sprang to fame in the West Ham academy where he spent 4 formative years between 1952 and 56. Briefly at Orient but scored well at Brighton (26 in 49 games), winning a promotion, before moving to SE25 in Summer 1959. Seems he may have had dodgy knees as retired at 30. Pic dated 19th Nov 1959:-

23 November 1929
North Eastern League
Workington v Scotswood
A pocket sized 4 page issue consisting of a folded piece of thin card. Team line ups on page 2; short editorial/information piece on page 3 and an advert on the back.
Workington won this match 5 - 2
23 November 1949
Wales v Belgium
A fantastic 5 - 1 win for Wales. There was a hat trick for Trevor Ford. This international friendly match was played at Ninian Park with an attendance of 27998.

Blaenau Amateurs v Pwllheli & District in the Gwynedd League.
I like this cover as it reminds me in the steam railway from Llandudno to Blaenau which is a fascinating journey and well worth the ticket price.
Blaenau Ffestiniog must be the greyest town I've ever seen. All that slate, probably. And it's always raining.

Saturday 24th November 1973
Division II
Portsmouth 2 Crystal Palace 2 (Rogers 2, 1 pen)
Gate: 14,211
As it stood at kick-off, Palace marooned at the bottom. Not the best of starts to a season but nearly got out of bother, only going down on the very last day by drawing at Cardiff when a win would have kept us up.
Sharp-shooter Don Rogers, 2 goals here and 15 in all that season.

24 November 1928
Chelsea v Port Vale
A 3 - 3 draw played in front of 23,305.
The cartoon on the cover reflects on the 2 - 1 defeat by Millwall the previous week as well as looking forward to the game v Port Vale.
On the same day:
Carlisle United Reserves v Workington (1st team)
North Eastern League Challenge Cup
Standard Carlisle programme from their first season in the League. The content includes a couple of pages about the FA Cup match that the 1st team were playing away that day at Wrexham.
