The same day Palace were rattling the goals in, Angus Morrison and Peter Doherty gave Derby a 2-0 victory over Wolves in front of 22,836.

Saturday 11th November 1950

Division III South

Plymouth Argyle 4 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 18,414

Not much to write about here in Palace's second consecutive wooden- spoon season, so I thought I'd give credit to probably the best beard on the circuit - and I don't think there were many - Argyle centre half & skipper Jack Chisholm. Started career post war at Tottenham but played only 2 games so moved to Brentford for 2 years, then to Sheffield United for 9 months before the switch to Home Park in Dec 1949 and played 175 games there. Also appeared in one county cricket match for Middlesex. Was known to have a pre-match drink in one of the pubs near his home ground, perhaps a contributory factor to his premature retirement in 1954 at just 30. Nicknamed "Jumbo", he sadly passed on in 1977, aged 52.

11 November 1950

Workington v Cleator Moor Celtic

FA Cup 4th qualifying round.

A bit of an upset here as Cleator Moor won 1 - 0 to set up a first round proper tie with Tranmere Rovers.

87 years ago, the second in what would be a run of 7 straight wins for Derby.

Chelsea 0 Derby 2 (Bowers, Duncan)

att: 24,422

Middlesbrough 1 Derby 1 (Lee)

att: 36,943

Trip to the outskirts of Oswestry for Kidderminster.
I don't think the home club are in existence any longer.

Saturday 12th November 1955

Division III South

Leyton Orient 8 (eight), Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 13,547

OMG! A decent-looking Palace line-up but sadly as flimsy as the programme itself which is almost in several pieces. Orient won the division so had a storming second half of the season, hitting 106 goals, while Palace never recovered from this hiding and slid down to 23rd, 4 points ahead of last-placed Swindon and seeking re-election again. This was keeper Roy Bailey's 118th and last game for the club, joining Ipswich in March and winning 2 promotions and the league championship there - quite a successful career move. And in 1958 he fathered Gary, the future England keeper.

12 November 1921

Workington v Chesterfield

This was a friendly played in the first year of the newly reformed Workington club. There is no clue in the programme as to why Chesterfield had made the very awkward journey up to Workington.

Eleven years later.....

12 November 1932

Halifax Town v Carlisle

Moving on we have two from 12 November 1949, both in Division 3 North:

Carlisle hosted Halifax and Mansfield hosted New Brighton

Tuesday 13th November 1945

Friendly

Chelsea 3 (Goulden, Williams, Lawton), Dynamo Moscow 3 (Kartsev, Archangelski, Bobrov)

Gate: 74,496 (official, but thought to be over 100,000)

Beaten up old programme but who cares for such an historic occasion? Dynamo missed a penalty, then scored a goal which was disallowed as it rebounded off a spectator. Their final equaliser was 5 yards offside but was allowed to stand for "diplomatic reasons". (Thanks to "The Chels" website for details)

13 November 1926

English Cup 4th Qualifying Round

Carlisle United v Whitehaven Athletic

A win for Carlisle saw them through to the 1st round proper and saw them enjoy a little cup run. They beat Hartlepools and then Bedlington before losing at home to Wolves in round 3.

On the same day:

Workington v Lancaster

A home win put Workington through to the 1st round proper where they went on to lose at home to Crook.

Moving on 11 years and in Division 3 North:

Darlington v Carlisle United

A 3 - 1 home win. Carlisle finished the season in 12th place with Darlington in 18th.

22 years after they met in the 4th qualifying round in 1926 Workington played Lancaster City again at the same stage in what they were still referring to as the “English” Cup

13 November 1948

Workington v Lancaster City

On that day Brunton Park hosted a match in the North Eastern League:

Carlisle Res v Hartlepools Res

13 November 1948

Division 3 North:

Tranmere Rovers v Carlisle United

Mansfield v Gateshead

Bradford City v New Brighton

Barrow v Hartlepools

Fantastic, colourful, covers from Mansfield and Bradford City

Testimonial match for David Booth, who made 200 appearances for Grimsby in the 70s and went on to manage them in the subsequent decade (along with about 30 other clubs round the world).

Llwydcoed is a wee village of 1,000 or so people not far from Aberdare.

Saturday 14th November 1970

Division I

Arsenal 1 (Radford) Crystal Palace 1 (Birchenall)

Gate: 34,503

Double season Arsenal and one of only three points they dropped at Highbury in securing the title. So Palace drew this game 5 days after winning there in the League Cup, thus becoming the only visiting team to succeed there in their double season. The narrative mentions the Cup game in which Arsenal must have had about 85% possession to Palace's 15% yet lost 2-0. 50 years on, how little the game has changed (from both sides' viewpoints)!

14 November 1931

London Combination

Watford v Fulham

14 November 1936

London Combination

Brentford v West Ham

Another reserve fixture:

Everton v Sheffield United

Carlisle v Darlington

Division 3 North

Carlisle won this 2 - 0. It would be good to see the modern day Darlington fight their way back into the League.

Also on this day in 1970 and, like the Arsenal - Palace game, also a 1-1 draw. John O'Hare for Derby, gate was 31,817

Not sure what George Heslop was trying to do in the photo!

High Pit Social 0 Chester-le-Street 2 (FA Vase)

A rather home-made feel to the programme, probably because it was a regulation to issue one and they weren't used to doing so. Club played at the Bates Welfare ground in Cramlington. I don't think they're still on the go and neither is the ground.

C-L-S would be beaten by Guisborough in the next round.

Saturday 15th November 1958

FA Cup 1st round

Ashford Town 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Collins)

Gate: 6,500

Banana-skin avoided by Palace, who earlier in the decade were knocked out 3 years in a row by non-leaguers so at the time I guess this was seen as a very good result.

Worth noting the referee - one Jack Taylor (Wolverhampton), then aged just 28 and on the way to an FA Cup Final, a European Cup Final and of course a World Cup Final. Probably the best we've ever had.

15 November 1930

Carlisle United v Wigan Borough

Borough played in the 3rd division north for about 10 seasons before resigning from the League in October 1931 after playing only 12 games of the 1931/2 season. It would be 47 years before Wigan hosted league football again when Athletic were elected to the league in place of Southport in 1978.

Coming back to the November 1930 fixture, Carlisle won by 6 goals to 1. The original owner of the programme has written the words “great day” on the team lines page.

15 November 1947
Carlisle United v New Brighton (Division 3 North)

Workington v Netherfield (English Cup 4th qualifying round)

Workington went through to the 1st round proper. Netherfield changed their name to Netherfield Kendal in 1998 are now just Kendal Town

15 November 1950

Roker Park played host to England v Wales.

England won 4 - 2 with goals from Eddie Baily (2), Wilf Mannion and Jackie Milburn.

The two Wales goals were both scored by Trevor Ford who had joined Sunderland a month or so earlier. Apparently, Ford didn’t get on with Len Shackleton who was Sunderland’s big star at the time. After 2 years Ford joined Cardiff City. He was eventually banned from British football for a time after blowing the whistle on illegal payments at Sunderland. He played in Holland (PSV Eindhoven) for 3 years before the suspension was lifted allowing him to finish his career playing briefly for Newport County and Romford

15/11/58 Division One
Arsenal 3 N. Forest 1
A win for the hosts in a season that saw them finish in third place, while the visitors ended up in mid table, but with the FA Cup in the trophy cabinet.

15/11/78 Friendly
Chelsea 1 Moscow Dynamo 2
Clive Walker netted for Chelsea against their Russian visitors in front of a crowd of 9,550.

15/11/86
Chorley 1 Wolves 1 FA Cup 1st Round
Quite possibly the low point in Wolves' proud history.
Playing in Division Four for the first time ever and in huge financial debt, they may have thought that a tie with opponents from the Northern Premier (then tier 6) would offer some respite, but were wrong.
Chorley waived the right to use their home ground and opted for Bolton's Burnden Park and gained a draw.
Wolves may have thought they had dodged a bullet, but three days later at Molineux, their non league opponents held them to another 1-1 draw.
The second replay was back at Bolton and Chorley stunned Wolves by beating them 3-0.
Chorley progressed into the 2nd Round where they held Preston to a 0-0 draw before finally falling in the replay 5-0.
Wolves failed to escape Division Four that season to add to the gloom.

Nov 15th, 1913

Friendly match between Hoffman Athletic and Nunhead.

Hoffman Athletic were formed in 1907 as the works team of the Hoffman Bearings Company based in Chelmsford. They lasted until 1984 when the club were dissolved.

A very different kind of match programme - almost a fanzine in its irreverent style. There's even note of which players were the most popular with the team's female supporters!
Seen this one turn up fairly regularly on auctions, usually for a quite reasonable price.
Worth having if just for its value as a curio of the times.

Nov 15th, 1924

Chelsea 1 Derby 1 (Murphy)

att: 35,000

Saturday 16th November 1946

Division III South

Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic 4 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 13,383

Arthur Hudgell played 25 times for Palace that season, scoring a penalty for his only goal, but he had played over 170 war-time games, usually at full back but sometimes at wing half. He must have made an impression though as Sunderland came in for him and smashed the record for a full back, and for a Division III player, when they paid £10,000 for him in January 1947. For a decade he excelled at Roker, playing over 250 league games there, and earning praise from one old boy I knew who said he was the best full back Sunderland ever had. Here he is in 1938/9 when about 18. He was at right back in this game at Dean Court which Boscombe won at a canter.

16 November 1946

Southport v Carlisle United

A nice 2 - 0 away win. The Carlisle team player manager was Ivor Broadis; like Arthur Hudgell (above) he moved to Sunderland where he became team mates with Hudgell.

While the 1st team were winning down at Southport, back at Brunton Park, the Carlisle Reserve team was losing 2 - 1.

Carlisle United v Hartlepools

North Eastern League
