Wednesday 21st October 1959, 61 years ago today
Southern Professional Floodlight Cup, 1st round (the cover is incorrect)
Crystal Palace 5 (Easton 4, Sexton), Brentford 2
Gate: 6,600
A cup competition that lasted for 5 seasons, and having beaten the Bees here thanks to 4 goals from young Harry Easton (of whom I don't have any photos) Palace then went out in Rd 2 after a replay to Southampton. And that ended our involvement in this event. In the previous season, 1958/9, Palace reached the final, losing 1-2 at home to Arsenal in front of nearly 33,000, which suggested it may have had some legs, but the fledgling League Cup, introduced in 1960/1, saw it off. |

Friday 22nd October 1971
Division I
Coventry City 1 (St John), Crystal Palace 1 (Tambling)
Gate: 20,801
Easily the most sexist programme in my collection.
And why on a Friday night? There was I, aged 15 and in my O-Level year, when my football-mad uncle, who lived near Coventry, invited my mum, dad and me up for the weekend, as he had tickets for this match and thought my dad and I might like to go with him. It meant I had to take the day off school and I have no idea how we wangled that.
Palace's new signings from Celtic, John Hughes and Willie Wallace, made their debuts and we got an important point as we finished in 20th, 4 points above relegated Forest and Huddersfield. City were 4 points further ahead.
Anyhow, my uncle had another treat planned for the Saturday - another game was in the offing. So where did we go? You'll never guess, but tune in tomorrow to find out. |

22 October 1960
Ashington v Annfield Plain
Northern Counties League
This one is a bit battered and bruised, but the cover has a great illustration:

Chelsea 1 Derby 3 (Bowers 2, Duncan)
att: 37,824
45 years ago in the Big Cup.
Derby 4 Real Madrid 1 (George 3, Nish)
att: 34,839
(shame about the second leg)
My local team - quarter of a mile up the hill on the left.
I've not much time for them - they're an oil company's plaything, basically.

Saturday 23rd October 1971
FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round
Alfreton Town 0 Nuneaton Borough 4 (Baker 3, Notley)
So this is where my uncle took us on Day 2 of our midland tour. He was a Nuneaton Borough diehard, he did all sorts of jobs there, from programme seller, to turnstile operator, to away-day organiser, which is where he was in 1971, aided by his daughter who worked in the booking office of Midland Red buses.
Southern League Premier Boro slaughtered Alfreton Town of the Midland League (in which they finished second) and Gerry Baker, the USA international and older brother of Joe, scored a treble. He was still only 33 and had been playing for Div 1 Coventry not much more than a year before. Also in their ranks at #10 was 26 year old David Pleat, who at that tender age was already player-manager. I wonder what became of him. Alfreton's #8 John Harrison scored over 300 goals for the club.
Boro lost in the 4th qual round after 2 replays, to Tamworth of the West Midlands Lge, but despite that, I've retained the proverbial soft spot for them ever since. |

23/10/54 Division One
Tottenham 3 Preston 1
A tough season for both clubs where they both finished on the same points total (40) and just five points away from the relegation zone.
23/10/65 Division One
WBA 3 Liverpool 0
A bit of a pasting for the visitors which was their fourth defeat in their opening thirteen matches. After this result though, they only lost three games for the rest of the season and ended up as Champions.
23/10/85 Cup Winners Cup 2nd Round 1st Leg
Bangor City 0 Atletico Madrid 3 - agg 0-4
Despite the defeat the Welsh minnows gave their Spanish opponents a proper game by the looks of it.
Madrid would go on to the Final where they lost to Dynamo Kiev.

Pete, your mention of Alfreton brought back some interesting memories. Worked there for a while in the 1970s. I remember going for a pint and available at the bar , free with your drink , was complimentary cold sliced black pudding . Never seen that before! |

It has been good to peruse it myself over the past few months. Have found things that I forgot I had and it’s also good to show a few items that have been stuck in boxes for years. |

Tunbridge Wells United v Bognor Regis (FAC)

Hastily arranged "International Friendly" for which only a large s/s was issued.
Derby 3 Zeljeznicar 2 (Bartlett 2, Hill)
att: 2,190 (the receipts from which probably didn't even cover Sarajevo's expenses)

24/10/59 Division One
Chelsea 1 Everton 0
Jimmy Greaves nets the only goal of the match to give victory to the hosts.
Both clubs would struggle this season and end up on 37 points each, just surviving the drop by three points.
24/10/59 Division One
Burnley 4 Man City 3
On the same day as the previous programme, Burnley took another step on their way to lifting the Title. City joined Chelsea and Everton on 37 points and survived relegation by three points also.
24/10/53 Division One
Charlton 1 Arsenal 5
A Ben Marden hat trick helps the visitors on their way to the points.
24/10/79 Cup Winners Cup 2nd Round 1st Leg
Arsenal 2 Magdeburg 1 - agg 4-3
Goals from Alan Sunderland and Willie Young give Arsenal the win over their German opponents on route to the Final where they were beaten on penalties by Valencia.
