14/10/59 Friendly
Newcastle 11 All Stars Select XI 4
Goals galore at St James Park with George Eastham and Len White both netting hat tricks in front of a crowd of 14,467against what looks a decent side on paper.
This was one of four friendlies that Newcastle played in the space of four weeks. I assume this was for extra revenue, but could be wrong.

After letting 11 goals in , it was probably thought that the away side's defence wouldn't amount to much.... especially the 2 full backs!! |

I wonder if that was the first time they played alongside each other? Neither had yet played for England and they were five years apart in age so unlikely to have played at any other level in the same team |

17/10/59 Division One
N. Forest 0 Birmingham 2
A real struggle for both clubs this season with Forest surviving the drop by just one point and Brum by two points.
17/10/02 Tribute Match
Tottenham 0 DC United 1
Not sure why this was called a Tribute match instead of the usual Friendly, but a pleasant day (apart from the result) for Spurs fans to see former stars once again.

Monday 17th October 1960
London Challenge Cup, 1st round replay
West Ham 6 Crystal Palace 2 (Barnett, Colfar)
After a 3-3 draw at Selhurst, Hammers coasted to a comfortable win in the replay at Upton Park. One look at the two line-ups gives a clue to the reason for the imbalance in the scoreline.
At centre forward for West Ham was Ron Brett, who started his career in 1954 at Palace and played 41 games, scoring 12 goals, before a move to West Ham in June 1959. He played only 12 games for the Hammers (4 goals) before becoming a £7,000 makeweight in the £65000 deal that took Johnny Byrne to Upton Park in March 62. Brett played a further 8 games (1 goal) for Palace at the end of the 61/2 season. On 25th August he appeared in the Combination fixture between Palace & West Ham (2-0) which turned out to be his last ever game because on 30th August 1962 he was killed in a car crash in Clerkenwell, just a few days before his 25th birthday. A very sad loss to what may have been a fine career at Palace who were on the up when he re-joined. Here he is in 1954 and below that an obituary in a Palace programme soon after the terrible event. RIP Ronnie.

Fulham v Portsmouth
A reserve fixture in the London Combination
Not rare or valuable but I like the image on the front. I haven’t been to Craven Cottage for over 20 years but it’s definitely one of my favourite grounds. Was there once watching Carlisle when Concorde flew over. |

Another couple of random non-league issues.
Ellesmere Port Town v Witton Albion in the FA Cup.
Owens Corning v Holyhead Hotspur in the Welsh Cup.
£1 gets you not only a fairly decent programme but also admission to the ground.

Saturday 18th October 1958
Division IV
Oldham Athletic 3 Crystal Palace 0
Gate: 6,884
A very disappointing result for Palace who didn't fare too well on their trips ooop North in that season, also losing at Chester, Hartlepools, Shrewsbury, Crewe, Bradford PA and Barrow. They finished 7th while the Latics ended up in 21st place.
The programme has many empty advertising slots and some of the filled ones are taken by the publishers who are pleading for advertisers. Also on the back, there's a "JUST TRY IT" answer and winner. The answer was "Mr G Howarth". So what was the question? I think I know, having read the programme, but can you guess? |

18/10/61 Division Four
Wrexham 3 Doncaster 1
Vastly differing fortunes for these clubs in this season as the hosts were promoted and the visitors had to seek re-election.
18/10/86 Division Two
Plymouth 2 Sunderland 4
Again, vastly differing seasons for these clubs with the hosts missing out on the Play Offs by just three points while the visitors were relegated.
18/10/58 Division One
Arsenal 1 Wolves 1
Wolves won the Title by a mile with the hosts finishing in third place.
18/10/06 Champions League Group Stage
Bordeaux 0 Liverpool 1
Peter Crouch nets the only goal as Liverpool top the group and go on to reach the Final where they would lose to AC Milan.

66 years ago, no opposition on the cover but this is a friendly match between Aldershot and Derby County.
I've no record of the final score/scorers/gate so if anyone can furnish me with any of that info, I'd be very grateful.

20/10/56 Division One
Arsenal 3 Tottenham 1
Derby Day victory for the hosts, but Spurs would have the better season finishing in second place.
20/10/56 Division One
Sheffield Wednesday 1 Blackpool 2
20/10/81 UEFA Cup 2nd Round 1st Leg
KFC Winterslag 1 Arsenal 0 - agg 2-2
Arsenal lose to their Belgian opponents who seven years later wisely decided to change their name from sounding like a fast food chain in the red light district in December to the more formal Genk.
20/10/92 Capital Cup 2nd Leg
Tottenham 0 Lazio 2 - agg 0-5
A two legged tie that was arranged as part of the deal that saw Paul Gascoigne move to Italy. Gazza, as you may recall, pulled down the shorts of his skipper Claudio Sclosa while he was raising the trophy at the end of the match.

Saturday 20th October 1945
Friendly
Crystal Palace 5 (Kurz 2, Lewis J, Price, Wilson) Gillingham 2
A blank week in the Div III South (South) league saw Palace host Kent League Gills in a friendly. Gills lost their Div III South place in 1938 and after WW2 started life in the Kent League, but in 46/7 moved to the Southern League and from there were promoted to Div III again for the 50/1 season. On the following Saturday, 27th Oct, a return friendly took place at the Priestfield with Gills winning 6-4. I wish I had that programme too. That's if you could resist the cycle polo match v Brighton. Tempting, or what?
Scorer of 2 goals here was Fred Kurz, then, as the previous owner noted, a Grimsby Town player loaned to Palace. He did in fact play 20 games for Palace in 1944/5 and signed full time for the Glaziers on Boxing Day 1945. And he was a fine Christmas present for the club, staying for 6 years and playing 154 games, scoring 48 goals - not a bad return in those shot-shy days at Palace. Here's Freddie....
