Monday 8th October 1962

London Challenge Cup, 1st round replay

Wimbledon 2 Crystal Palace 0

The London Challenge Cup was introduced in 1908 and continued through to 1974, being contested by London clubs with usually a mix of first team and reserve players. In the example here, Palace included the likes of Ronnie Allen and Johnny McNichol, a couple of good youngsters in John Jackson and Alan Stephenson, and a reserve full back at centre forward. Looking at the 2 list of Dons 1st team & reserve goalscorers, their side also looked to be a mix. But it was good enough for Palace, who, after a 2-2 draw a week earlier, also at Plough Lane, lost this replay 2-0.

Palace won the competition itself 3 times - 1913, 1914 and 1921 - but hadn't reached the final since 1947. For lower league clubs like Palace, and good non-leaguers like the Dons, it gave their players the chance to play against Arsenal, Spurs etc, sometimes at the top London grounds - you can see the attraction. But for clubs like Arsenal it must have been an inconvenience and one tournament too many. And so it died in 1974, though it made a 10-year come-back in the 90's for mainly non-league clubs.

Saturday 9th October 1943

Football League - South

Fulham 4 Crystal Palace 5 (A Dawes 2, Wilson, Ward, Somerfield)

Gate: c 8,000

Palace finished 5th in this war-time season, and Fulham 9th with 18 in the division. Fulham's 80 goals scored was a divisional high, with Palace not far behind with 75. The Dawes brothers, who both featured here, were Palace stalwarts and Fred ran a newsagents later in life where one of my best mates worked as a paper boy and heard all his footballing stories. Fred and Ronnie Rooke (Fulham #9) both later served as Palace managers. Here's Fred in 1938:-

Aberdeen v Hamilton

Aberdeen programmes from the late 40s and early 50s have great cover designs. This one is no exception.

Saturday 10th October 1970 - 50 years ago today

Division I

Manchester United 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Tambling)

Gate: 42,979

And as if by magic, here's a brilliant photo of referee and fitness fanatic Roger Kirkpatrick - with Mel Blyth (left), John McCormick, John Aston & 10 Alan Birchenall in the background. What a character this man was and as they say, they don't make them like him any more. Worth the entrance fee on his own!

East Kilbride Thistle v Clyde.

A better programme than the very basic cover suggests it will be.

Tuesday 11th October 1966

Terry Long Testimonial Match

Crystal Palace 5 International XI 7

Gate: 17,614

Terry signed from Wycombe Wanderers in May 1955 and served Palace for 18 years, playing his last game in September 1968 - he made 470 starting appearances, in 4 divisions, mainly at full back and wing half, plus 10 as sub, and scored 18 goals. After retiring he served as coach and then assistant manager to Bert Head. Only Jim Cannon has played more games.

A lovely man whom I have had the pleasure of talking to several times, so humble and genuine. And now still with us, not far short of 90, but suffering with dementia. Easy

Quite a line-up in opposition with World Cup winners and even Jimmy McIlroy on the bench, plus Mike Summerbee on the wing for Palace, and Jim Finney refereeing.

11/10/58 Division Three
Southend 3 Halifax 2
Top ten finishes for both clubs, but nowhere near the promotion places.

11/10/2000 World Cup Qualifier
Finland 0 England 0
Four days after the home defeat to Germany and Kevin Keegan's resignation, Caretaker manager Howard Wilkinson's team officially made it England's worst start to a qualification campaign with a miserable draw.
A weird campaign then saw the historic 5-1 win in Germany and David Beckham's last ditch free kick against Greece take us to the Finals.

11/10/78 Friendly
Wigan 2 Zambia 1
Zambia also played Workington on this tour to prepare them for their CECAFA Cup campaign where they made it to the Final, but lost to Malawi.
They were managed by ex Wigan player & manager, Brian Tiler who would sadly lose his life in that well documented car crash in Italy that nearly took Harry Redknapp's life as well in 1990.

Wednesday 12th October 1960

League Cup 1st round

Darlington 2 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 9,940

Inaugural season for the League Cup reflected in the gate for a Wednesday evening game against a team from South London. No idea how many away fans there were. But Darlo won this and drew West Ham in Round 2, Bobby Moore and all, and beat them 3-2 in front of over 21,000. Heady days at Feethams, and for the League Cup which, as I write, is likely to be scrapped if the lovely Prem "Big 6" have their way.

Darlington lost to Bolton in the 3rd round but their cup exploits weren't finished there as in the FA Cup, they beat Grimsby before meeting Hull in R2 in a tie that went to 4 replays before the Tigers finally won.

Darlo also finished a healthy 7th in Division 4, but Palace were promoted as runners-up to Posh in their debut season. And they didn't win a League Cup tie till 1964.
