A friendly played as part of civic celebrations and to mark the official opening of the Borough Park stadium which Workington had been using for a few months.

Saturday 29th September 1962
Scottish League Div II
Queen's Park v East Stirlingshire
I know little about this game - all I do know is, the Shire were promoted to Div 1 in that season as runners-up to St Johnstone. |

29 September 1965
Kilmarnock v Nandori Tirana (European Cup)
Interesting opposition for Kilmarnock as Albania was very much behind the iron curtain. Having managed a 0 - 0 draw in the away leg Kilmarnock were happy to win the home leg 1 - 0.

The Cobblers were in the middle of an impressive eighteen match unbeaten run and would end the season being promoted.
Ipswich had only one win from their previous ten matches, but rallied to finish in fifth place.

29/9/82 UEFA Cup 1st Round 2nd Leg
Arsenal 2 Spartak Moscow 5 - agg 4-8
As I often did around this time, if Spurs were not playing on the same night, I would go and watch Arsenal, but always stood in the Clock End with the away fans. On this night I was surrounded by several hundred Russians as they celebrated an emphatic win against their hosts and I thought I was watching the team that would go all the way. They didn't though and fell two rounds later at the hands of Valencia.
Incredibly, Arsenal had actually led 2-0 in the first leg before it all went wrong.

I miss those days - just being able to decide on a whim to go and watch a game in London - it was cheap and always pay on the gate. I remember one day in 86 I think, West Ham v Chelsea was iced off couple of hours before kick off so I just went to Arsenal v Spurs instead. Can't imagine that now |
Those comments took me back to pay on the gate days. Pretty much all of our games in the 70's, you were able to just turn up and hand your money over, in good time of course! "Good time" could be anything up to 3 hours before, sometimes more. We were in the queue for the Kop at 10.30 am for the 3 o'clock kick off with Leeds in 1974. In those days I would say 90% of our support was from the same county, how times change..... |

Nice to see that my post yesterday brought back memories for some about the days where we could just pay at the gate on a whim.
Here's another one at Highbury where I stood with the away fans. This time they were very excitable Greek chappies!
I was always risking my neck at Highbury as a Spurs supporter, but my mate who was with me that night was a Turkish Spurs fan and probably lucky to leave the place in one piece!
30/9/81 UEFA Cup 1st Round 2nd Leg
Arsenal 1 Panathinaikos 0 Agg 3-0
A sole Brian Talbot goal won the match, but Arsenal would unexpectedly lose in the next round to Winterslag from Belgium, who we now know as Genk.

WEDNESDAY 30th SEPTEMBER 1970
European Cup Winners Cup 1st Round 2nd Leg
European Cup Winners Cup holders Manchester City field a full strength team to take on part-timers Linfield - Man City Team: Corrigan, Book, Pardoe, Doyle, Jeffries, Oakes, Summerbee, Bell, Lee, Young, Towers
Circa 24,000 watch as the part-timers give City, holding a 1-0 lead from the 1st Leg, a real scare by winning ther tie 2-1. Only a Colin Bell goal giving City an away goals aggregate victory.
Man City went on to reach the Semi-Final losing 2-0 on aggregate to Chelsea.
