Wednesday 25th September 1963
League Cup, 2nd round
Bristol Rovers 2 Crystal Palace 0
Gate: 4,859
Palace contrived to lose to a team playing its second match in 48 hours (and third in 5 days) as Rovers had to take on Shrewsbury in a 1st round replay on Monday night, two days before this match. But inglorious defeat enabled the South London outfit to concentrate on the league and that they did, winning promotion to Div 2 for the first time since 1925. The Pirates ended in 12th place.
As you can see, Rovers thought fit to apologise for the sub-standard single-sheet programme. What they did do was create a scarce object. When I started collecting after a 20-year hiatus in the mid 90's, this was the most sought-after Palace away programme, prices well into 3 figures and for about 10 years all I had was a photocopy of it. But along came a mate who had two so I got this one from him, and I believe prices are now down to a more sensible level. |

25 September 1948
Doncaster Rovers v Carlisle United
Rovers won this one 2 - 0.
Great picture of the old Belle Vue ground on the cover. I first saw Carlisle away there in 1982 and I don’t think it was much different than in 1948. |

25/9/68 League Cup 3rd Round
Scunthorpe 1 Arsenal 6
One of the few games where David Jenkins got to play for Arsenal and he helped himself to a hat trick. The Gunners made light work of their fourth Division opponents and were on route to the Final that season where they lost to third Division Swindon in a major upset.

Northampton 0 Sheffield Weds 0
att: 16,299
Cobblers remain winless after 9 league games, lying in 21st place, two points ahead of Blackburn. (Note to self: must get a better condition copy of this prog)
On the same day, the reserves went down 2-4 at the City Ground.

Wednesday 26th September 1962
League Cup, 2nd Round
Leeds United 2 (Storrie, Charlton) Crystal Palace 1 (Long)
Gate: 7,274
Third season of the League Cup reflected in the low gate between two clubs for whom this was the first meeting since 1930. Leeds were starting to have a familiar look to them with Sprake in goal and the half back line missing the injured Bremner but with Charlton & Hunter in familiar positions.
As for Palace, yet to win a League Cup tie and also not to play a home game in it till 1964. Terry Long scored the goal, one of 18 in his 480 appearances. Here he is in 1959.

26 September 1931
Carlisle United Reserves v Wallsend
One match and two issues! Both numbered as issue 8.
From season 1923/4 the Carlisle programme was titled “The United’s News”. At the start of 1931/2 “the Brunton Budget” appeared alongside it. Both were available throughout 1931/2 season and for most, if not all, of 1932/3. At some point during 32/3 or at the end of that season, The United’s News ceased and the Budget carried on.
I was told years ago that the United’s News had always been produced by the Supporters Club on behalf of the club. There was a fall out in 1931 and the club decided to produce for itself. That would mean that the official programme for the Wallsend match (and others that season and next) was the Brunton Budget.

26/9/59 Division One
Arsenal 2 Blackpool 1
A win for the hosts in a season that would see both clubs finish mid table.
26/9/59 Division One
Nottingham Forest 2 Bolton 0
Forest survived relegation by just one point at the end of the season. Bolton were 6th.
26/9/90 League Cup 2nd Round 1st Leg
Torquay 0 Man City 4 (agg 0-4)
4th Division Torquay got the top flight opposition they would have wanted in the draw, but then got spanked at Plainmoor.
They did do better in the return leg at Maine Road where they held City to a draw.
Torquay would go on the win promotion this season.
26/9/95 Auto Windscreens Shield
Wigan 1 Scunthorpe 1
Both sides made it through the group stage at the expense of Bury, but both would fall in the first knockout matches they played.

26 September 1938
Workington v Hexham (North Eastern League)
A 7 - 2 home win took Workington to the top of the table and rooted Hexham to the bottom. Hexham were still without a point after 6 games. Standard programme for that season with an encouragement to come along two days later to a friendly v Preston North End when the FA Cup was going to be on display.

Midland League
Stamford v Arnold.
Don't know the score but Arnold would finish the season runners-up to Grantham whereas Stamford would end up second from last.
One of those s/sheet programmes folded to make 6 pages though there's virtually nothing to read other than ads.
Even the visiting team's line-up is left blank.
Though buy a car from S.M.Service Station and you get 4 gallons of petrol for free if you present the programme at the time of purchase.

Thursday 27th September 1956
Division III South
Newport County 2 Crystal Palace 2 (Cooper, Thomas og)
Gate: 8,108
3 Palace goalkeepers
Keeper in this game was Ray Potter, the middle one in this group of 3 Palace keepers who battled for a game in the early/mid 50's. On the left is Dave Macdonald, a Scot who played 37 games before moving to Bath City in 1955. On the right is the great Roy Bailey, who played 119 games before joining Ipswich in 1956 and going on to win a league title there in 1962. He's the father of Gary Bailey. And Potter appeared 49 times before he joined WBA in 1958 and played 217 games there.
Palace have always been blessed with good goalkeepers. Long may that continue! |

Yorkshire League Div.2
Hull Brunswick v Ossett Town
Not long afterwards, the home club (formed in 1894) would fold when their ground was lost as a result of 'landlord redevelopment plans' in late 1973.
