Wednesday 22nd September 1954
Division III South
Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic 4 Crystal Palace 1 (Andrews, pen)
Gate: 10,486
Good insight into the sort of problems club directors faced 66 years ago, some things just don't change.
Palace 20th finished, Boscombe 17th, 4 points above. Palace beat them 2-1 a week later. Laurie Scott was manager but lasted till the end of September, Cyril Spiers taking over on 13th Oct.
Palace's goal was scored by Cecil "Archie" Andrews, nickname gained from the ventriloquist's doll on the radio show "Educating Archie", hugely popular at the time - ventriloquism rivalling snooker in the high stakes for radio listening figures. |

Carlisle City 2 Chester le Street Town 0
With crowds of just over 100 City produce an excellent little programme for £1 and even hand out a free teamsheet. A few Scottish fans have been crossing the border to get a football fix at the last few home games. I hope that the lockdown measures announced today don’t remove the right to attend these grass roots fixtures.

Saturday 23rd September 1967
Division II
Aston Villa 0 Crystal Palace 1 (Woodruff, pen)
Gate: 12,484
The first-ever league meeting between these 2 clubs, Palace on their way upwards in the league, and Villa on their way down as is reflected in their very poor gate. They ended just 2 points apart in this season (Palace 39 in 11th, Villa 37 in 16th) and Villa won the return fixture by the same score in Feb 68, but the writing was on the wall for both clubs.
Bobby Woodruff (signed from Wolves) was the Palace scorer, he got 18 in this season. Photo shows him in action earlier in that year, at Selhurst v Plymouth.

23 September 1950
Carlisle United v Scunthorpe & Lindsey United
This was Scunthorpe’s first League season. They didn’t drop the “& Lindsey” from their name until 1958, but it seems not to be used much in 1950.
The match ended in a 3 - 1 win for the home side.
Scunthorpe and Shrewsbury had been elected to 3rd division north as part of the overall expansion from 88 to 92 clubs. They had beaten off both Wigan Athletic and Workington who had also applied.
Workington were elected to the league in place of New Brighton at the end of the 1950/1 season. On 23 September 1950 they were at home to Carlisle Reserves in the North Eastern League.

Stirling Albion v Third Lanark
A 2 - 0 home win. I assume the ground view on the front is of the Annfield Stadium. Stirling moved to their current ground in the early 90s

23/9/87 League Cup 2nd Round 1st Leg
Doncaster 0 Arsenal 3 (agg 0-4)
Easy pickings for Arsenal against their third Division opponenets who would have a dreadful season and be relegated a whopping twenty points from safety.
23/9/70 Inter Cities Fairs Cup 1st Round 2nd Leg
Arsenal 2 Lazio 0 (agg 4-2)
Arsenal got the job done at Highbury and would go on to reach the last eight before losing to Cologne.

Friday Night Football comes to Boothferry Park as Hull City entertain Northampton Town.
The Cobblers were still feeling the effects of relegation from Division One in May 1966 and lost this match 6-1
Northampton lost 6 in a row after this match and failed to stave off a 2nd successive Relegation come May 1967.
The Cobblers were to slide back down the Leagues even faster than they went from Div 4 in 1961 to Div 1 in 1965 ending back in Div 4 for the 1969-70 Season. |

24/9/55 Division One
Tottenham 3 Newcastle 1
Two goals from Alfie Stokes helped Spurs to the second of what would be one of two wins in their opening fifteen matches.
They survived relegation by just four points, while the Geordies finished in top half safety with only four points more.
24/9/56 Friendly
Mansfield v Manager's All Stars XI
The Manager's team was made up of ex-International players who had turned their hand to Management and among their number were Bill Shankly, Joe Mercer, Raich Carter & Tommy Lawton.

FA Amateur Cup
Post Office Engineers v Barclays Bank
Barclays had been drawn at home for this tie but had requested a change of venue. PO Engineers played in the London League and, at the time, lay 13th out of 15 teams.
The Barclays' strip must have been quite a sight to behold as they are listed as playing in "Black, gold, maroon and silver".
If anyone knows the result of this tie, do let me know.
65 years ago, Oreston Rovers produced the most basic programme possible for their home game in the Plymouth Combination Lge with Tamerton.
Apart from the lineups, there's nothing other than adverts. There seems to be a space on the back page for club notes but it's blank.
One interesting advert - Maison Terry combines a gents hairdressing salon with an espresso coffee bar, the latter being all the rage throughout the country at that time. Hard to imagine Plymouth's beatniks going anywhere near a barber's, though!
