Surrey Intermediate Lge

Summerstown Reserves 5 Croydon Athletic 0

I believe the home club folded 4 years later and sold their main stand to Wealdstone.

Oxon Senior League
Banbury Spencer v Osberton Radiators

Unusual programme in that the team lineups are on a small 4x3" 4 page insert stapled into the centre of the programme itself. On either side of the insert is a quiz and the answers to the previous week's one.
Which appears to have been won by the match referee!

The wording under the club badge on the front cover ("Hanging the cat on a Monday for the killing of a mouse on Sunday") baffles me - is it perhaps connected to the history of the town in some way?

20 September 1952

Barrow v Mansfield Town

A 3 - 0 home win. I wonder if the “face in crowd” claimed his dry cleaning voucher.

21 September 1929

New Brighton v Carlisle United.

A large, flimsy, 4 page programme.

The match finished 2 - 1 to the home team. New Brighton went on to finish the season in 13th place with Carlisle in 15th

Hartlepool 0 Arsenal 5 (agg 0-7)
No sending out a team of kids in those days as Ian Wright 2, Alan Smith, Paul Merson and Tony Adams all found the net.

21 September 1921

A nice Crystal Palace issue for their home reserve match v Clapton Orient.

A great offer of a subscription for the 50 or so issues of the programme that were expected to be issued during the season for first team, reserves etc of the lot for 8 shillings (40p in today’s money). I would guess that the family of anyone who subscribed and kept the 50 issues in good condition could be sitting on somewhere between £5000 and £10000 worth of programmes.

Banbury was a centre of Puritanism in the 17th century so the club nickname came from that

The reference to hanging a cat on Monday for killing a mouse on Sunday is an old anti Puritan joke - that they were so diligent about keeping the sabbath that they hung cats for chasing mice on Sundays..

Empoli v Ternana Serie B

I've never been to an Italian ground where programmes were on sale but many offer a free publication which can be picked up inside the ground.

This was early in the reign of Maurizio Sarri at Empoli and they had made a slow start and lost this match 2-0. As he was Empoli's third manager in 2012 he may have felt his job was at risk but they recovered to finish fourth and went up in 2014.

The front cover features Massimo Maccarone who had five years at Middlebrough in between his stints at Empoli. Ternana, from the industrial Umbrian town of Terni, play in the famous red and green stripes as shown.

Saturday 21st September 1957

Division III South

Shrewsbury Town 0 Crystal Palace 0

Gate: 7,607

Goalless draw at Gay Meadow didn't help either side in the big scheme of things as at the end of that season Div III North & South were merged to become Divs 3 & 4. Both Palace & Shrews finished in the bottom half (Palace 14th, Shrews 17th) so both ended up in Div IV.

The programme is one long sheet of paper folded 4 times concertina-style to leave a regular size cover, which has no mention whatsoever of the fixture or opponents. And cost 6d which was huge at the time and there's no lucky number on this one.

On the left wing for Palace was one Graham Muxworthy, for whom this was the first of just 2 appearances. A Bristol boy, he signed from Exeter United but didn't stay at Palace for long and joined Chippenham Town, before reappearing for his home town Rovers 8 times in 1962/3. The net reveals that in 2018, aged 80, Muxworthy was still working in football, coaching at Bristol City, with a long list of players nurtured by him dating back to the 1990's. Quite a career, off the pitch, anyway. This snippet is from the Bristol Rovers "Pirates in Profile".

SATURDAY 21st SE{TEMBER 1963
Sheffield Utd welcome Liverpool to Bramall Lane and 24932 witness a 3-0 home win. Liverpool won the return fixture in February 1964 6-1 on the way to winning the Championship.

The front cover picture shows the 3 sided Bramall Lane ground with the Cricket Pavilion in the background. Yorkshire County Cricket Club played games at Sheffield until Aug 1973, the final game being a drawn Roses match against Lancashire.
Bramall Lane was originally a Cricket ground (1855) but is one of only two grounds (the other being the Oval) which has hosted England football internationals (five games prior to 1930), an England cricket test match (a single Test, in 1902, against Australia) and an FA Cup Final (the 1912 replay, in which Barnsley beat West Bromwich Albion, 1–0). It also regularly hosted FA Cup semi-finals and replays between 1889 and 1938.
The ground has also hosted rugby league games for the Sheffield Eagles and has also been selected to host England V Greece in the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. The ground also hosted a Billy Graham Evangelist meeting in 1985, a pair of rock concerts by Bruce Springsteen in 1988 in front of 88,000 people, a friendly match for the 150th anniversary of the world's oldest football club Sheffield F.C., where they played Inter Milan in 2007. Also hosting a Travis Pastrana Motor cross event in 2016, an IBF Welterweight title boxing match featuring Sheffield United fan Kell Brook, in front of 27,000 people in 2017, the Women's League Cup final and a Rod Stewart concert both in 2019. The stadium has also been used several times to host England youth teams in friendly and competitive matches.

The record attendance for the ground is 68,287 set at an FA Cup 5th Round tie between Sheffield United and Leeds United on 15 February 1936, How on earth did 68287 squeeze into a 3 sided stadium?

Shoebury Town v Westcliff Amateur.

This is the first game of the season for both clubs and is in the Walton Cup - described as "a knockout competition for 1st teams of the League".....only they don't state what League it is. And there's no indication anywhere within the 4 page programme.

Anyone know? If it's any help, Shoebury's next opponents are listed as Southchurch Rovers, followed by Post Office, Haden United and BKS Sports.

They must like their meat in Shoeburyness - there are no fewer than 4 adverts for local butchers.

West Ham 2 Derby 0
att: 26,601

Standard 4 page Hammers issue - p.2 has a short article on right-back William Wade, stating that 'in private life, he is a chauffeur-mechanic'.
Perhaps he needed to supplement his income?

22/9/56 Division One
Newcastle and Burnley share the points at St James Park in a 1-1 draw.

22/9/58 Division Four
Torquay 2 Bradford Park Avenue 1
Funny how Torquay didn't feel the need to distinguish between Park Avenue and City on the programme.

Signed on the team page by Ernie Pym who was one of Plainmoor's greatest ever goalscorers and a one club man at league level.

I sold this press photo of Ernie Pym a couple of months ago.

Even now BPA are officially Bradford (Park Avenue) AFC, according to Wikipedia " Its name, derived from its former home Park Avenue, was used to avoid confusion with Bradford City, but the club is traditionally known locally simply as Bradford"
