Wednesday 17th September 1952
Division III South
Reading 4 Crystal Palace 1 (Devonshire)
Gate: 9,988
The Biscuits completed an early season double having won 3-0 at Selhurst on the previous Wednesday. Palace had a good season for them in this period, ending up 13th, just 3 points behind Reading in 11th.
Scorer here for Palace was Les Devonshire, father of West Ham & England's Alan, a winger who scored 12 goals in 86 appearances for Palace after signing from Chester in 1951. Les was with Wealdstone before joining Brentford in 1948, but failed to make an appearance there so headed north and played 44 times for Chester with 4 goals. He moved to Margate in 1955 before retiring. His son Alan was born in 1956. |

17/9/62 Southern League
Chelmsford City v Rugby Town
17/9/58 Division One
Luton 5 Man City 1
A spanking handed out by the Hatters who were on an unbeaten run of ten matches from the start of the season. City on the other hand had won on the opening day, but would not win again for ten matches.
At the end of the season, City survived by just one point with Luton also in a lowly 17th position.
17/9/58 Division Two
Fulham 4 Lincoln 2
Fulham's sixth win on the trot and they would not lose until their 13th match of the season. Lincoln were the total opposite and having won on the opening day were on a run of nine games where victory would elude them.
The season continued in the same vein for both clubs and Fulham were promoted while Lincoln survived by just one point.

Man City 3 Derby 2 (Broome, Carter)
att: 38,481
45 years ago and back into the European Cup.
Slovan Bratislava 1 Derby 0
This programme has always been comparatively easy to find though, reading through it, it looks like a mighty difficult language to learn.
Derby still progressed, winning the return leg 3-0.

18 September 1948
Kilmarnock v Queens Park (League Cup)
A “Killie White” edition.
The Killie Whites are truly iconic programmes. I have collected about a dozen over the years. The issue above is one of the more common ones but will still cost £100 or so. The rarer issues fetch fabulous prices and there is serious competition when any appear for auction. |

18/9/57 Division Two
Fulham 0 Ipswich 0
The hosts were on an unbeaten run of eight matches from the start of the season, but would miss out on promotion by just four points in 5th place with the visitors three places behind in 8th.
18/9/91 European Cup 1st Round 1st Leg
Sparta Prague 1 Rangers 0 (agg 2-2 Sparta won on away goals)
A solitary goal from Jiri Nemec sealed the victory for the hosts.
The competition was in a weird form this season. Sparta got through a second round two legged tie and were then placed in one of two groups of four where the winners then met in the Final.
Sparta finished second in the group to Barcelona (the eventual winners), but if their two head to head matches had been a two legged tie, they would have beaten the Catalan side.

Saturday 18th September 1954
Division III South
Aldershot 3 Crystal Palace 0
Gate: 7,002
I thought the train fares might be of some interest given the stories in the press today.
Shots whipped Palace here and the South Londoners just avoided seeking re-election (again) by finishing in 20th place with 38 points, while their hosts ended up in 14th with 45 points. Early leaders Bristol City romped away with the title, 9 points up on runners-up Orient. |

I suspect this one came out of a bound volume - didn't Ipswich homes of the time have a colourful outer shell?

Saturday 19th September 1959
Division IV
Crewe Alexandra 1 Crystal Palace 1 (Roche)
Gate: 7,786
Spoils shared and Palace ended in 8th place on 50 points while Crewe were 14th with 45. A disappointing outcome and Palace manager, George Smith, who said at the start of that season that if he didn't get Palace promoted he would resign, duly resigned. And the Glaziers went up the following season. But Smith had lain the foundations, given the rubbish in this decade that had preceded his arrival. A lot of credit should go to him. |

19/9/53 Division One
Arsenal 2 Man City 2
A "topsy turvy" season for Arsenal. After failing to win in their first eight matches of the season, this draw was the second game in a run of eighteen matches where they were only beaten twice.
Unsurprisingly, with that erratic form, they ended up in a mid table 12th position while City were 17th.
19/9/59 Division One
Chelsea 2 West Ham 4
Relegation was a real possibility for both clubs this season and Chelsea survived by just three points with the Hammers only one point better off.

19 September 1972
Liverpool v Carlisle United LC2 replay
Having drawn 2 - 2 at Brunton Park two weeks earlier, Liverpool thrashed Carlisle 5 - 1 in the replay
First goal headed in by Kevin Keegan
Phil Boersma scores first of his two goals
Chris Lawler scores the fourth goal. Looks like an easy save for Alan Ross but the ball bounces off his arm and into the net.

Tuesday 20th September 1960
Division IV
Southport 3 (Harrison 2, AN Other 1), Crystal Palace 3 (Gavin, Byrne, Lunnis)
Gate: 5,434
60 years ago and promotion-chasing Palace were held to a 3-3 draw by Southport. 60 years later, very nearly to the day, they won 3-1 at Manchester United. How times change. Anyway, Palace went up in this season, while the Sandgrounders finished 14th.
I was wondering why this poor programme, with almost zero reading matter in its 8 pages, cost as much as sixpence, when all others I checked cost 3d or 4d. There on the back page is the reason. The programme served as a raffle ticket for the Cup final and an England v Scotland international ticket. Nice prizes indeed. |

20/9/58 Division One
Arsenal 4 Man City 1
The hosts would have a good season ending in third place while the visitors flirted once again with relegation and only survived by one point.
