Saturday 13th September 1958
Division IV
York City 1 Crystal Palace 1 (Collins)
Gate: 8,368
The first-ever meeting between these 2 clubs and chosen by me as the Palace goal was scored by left winger Tony Collins, the first black player to play for Palace and Watford and probably Torquay Utd. Later manager of Rochdale and Bristol City and coach and scout till beyond retirement years. A true man of football whose tale is told in a couple of superb books "Tony Collins, Football Master Spy", and the very recent "Football's Black Pioneers" - both worth checking out. |

Great choice Pete. I will look out for those books. |

13 September 1928

Third home game of Carlisle’s first League season and a 4 - 2 win.
Jimmy McConnell scored a hat trick. Jimmy was a prolific goal scorer while at Carlisle from 1928 to 1932. He scored 124 goals in 149 appearances. He played briefly for both Crewe and Rotherham after leaving Carlisle. He died at the age of 50 in 1949.

Jimmy McConnell is one of Auchinleck Talbot's most famous sons. |

According to Wikipedia the last 4 clubs Jimmy McConnell played for before joining Carlisle were in the USA.
Springfield Babes
Providence Clamdiggers
Bethlehem Steel
J and P Coats
I wonder what brought him back to this country and to Carlisle in particular. |

My first thought was that they were wierd and wonderful teams in the west of Scotland which would have been more priceless. It’s strange how there are examples of relatively unknown players going abroad in the 20s, especially to America. Pete, you will also know the Pre World War I player from Carlisle and Palace who managed Inter Milan. Even in those days the world was a relatively small place |

Having googled the American soccer teams in the 1920s it seems that lots of Scottish football players went over to play for teams on the east coast. The teams all seemed to recruit players from minor Scottish teams. 1926 was the year of the general strike so living and working conditions would have been harsh in the UK. There are links to Wikipedia pages for numerous Scottish footballers who moved across the Altlantic in the mid 1920s looking for a better life. |

14 September 1974
Newcastle United 1 Carlisle United 0
A John Tudor goal separated the teams at St James’s Park.
A couple of years ago John Tudor’s family revealed that he is battling Alzheimer’s disease, potentially linked to years of heading a football. He is a legend on Tyneside and played alongside Supermac, Malcolm McDonald, in the game against Carlisle. |

14/9/64 Division One
Aston Villa 2 Sunderland 1
With neither side having won in their first seven games of the season, Villa began their climb to safety. The visitors would win the following week and surprisingly, both finished the season in mid table safety.
14/9/63 Division One
Wolves 1 Blackburn 5
A bit of a spanking for the Molineux faithful to endure, but as it states on the teamsheet, a lot of them wouldn't get wet if it rained to make it worse!
14/9/06 Europa League Round 1
FC Levadia Tallin 0 Newcastle 1 (agg1-3)
Antoine Sibierski with the only goal for the Magpies in Estonia.

Monday 14th September 1970 (50 years ago today)
League Cup 2nd round replay
Rochdale 1 Crystal Palace 3 (Queen, Scott, T Taylor)
Gate: 8,911
They talk of the first game at Selhurst in the programme, on the previous Wednesday, a game in which Dale truly played Palace off the park and deserved more than a 3-3 draw. Cult hero Reg Jenkins I believe scored twice in that game and weighed in with an unfortunate own goal for a sort of hat-trick. But the replay in front of a healthy Spotland crowd saw Palace move comfortably into the third round where Lincoln City awaited.
