Northampton still finding their feet in the top flight - goals from Alan Suddick and Bobby Cummings earn Newcastle a 2-0 victory and drop the Cobblers into the relegation zone.

Also 55 years ago - 4th Sept 1965
Division II
Middlesbrough 2 Crystal Palace 2 (Lawson, Stephenson)
Gate: 10,160
Nice comments from departing Boro skipper Mel Nurse, after 113 league games in 3 seasons.
I do like the Boro cover but it always reminds me of filling in the holes and gaps inside letters, which begs the old chestnut - which is the only league club that can't be "filled in"? |

THURSDAY 4th SEPTEMBER 1958
First season of the new 4th Division after scrapping the old regional 3rd Divisions North and South.... Workington make the long road trip to Torquay on Thursday evening but lose 4-1 in front of a crowd of 5725.
What both clubs would do for such crowds today!

5 September 1938
Halifax Town v Stockport County
A three all draw between two teams that I would like to see back in the football league. Programme has an orange cover rather than the more traditional blue for the home team.

The Saints take the points and would go on to lift the Title that season.

SATURDAY 5th SEPTEMBER 1964
Newly promoted Leeds Utd and Sunderland renew their rivalry in Division 1 as Leeds visit Roker Park:
A crowd of 48858 watch an entertaining 3-3 draw as honours finish even.
Sunderland issued the small popular pocket sized programme for 3 seasons. |

WEDNESDAY 5th SEPTEMBER 1962
Newly promoted Leyton Orient visit Goodison Park and suffer a 3-0 defeat. The next 2 games delivered home wins for Orient over Manchester Utd 1-0 and Everton 3-0 in what would prove to be the best sequence of the season as they plunged back into the 2nd Division being relegated with just 21 points. Manchester City went down with Orient:
Meanwhile, Everton would go on to be crowned League Champions, For some reason Everton changed the programme cover starting with a the Blackpool home game in November1962:

Saturday 5th September 1959
Division IV
Millwall 4 Gateshead 0
Some interesting notes from Lions' boss Jimmy Seed
For some reason one of the very first non-Palace programmes to land in my collection. No idea how or why. Millwall finished in a frustrating 5th place to miss promotion by 4 points, while the Heed ended 22nd (6 points above bottom-placed Hartlepools) and were drummed out of the league in favour of Peterborough. |

Third Division (North) 65 years ago.
Crewe 2 Derby 1 (Cooke og)
att: 8,259
In goal for the third and final time for Derby was goalkeeper William White who had been obtained from Mansfield on a "temporary transfer" - the forerunner of today's far more prevalent loan deal.

Stockport County v Grimsby Town
Stockport covers from the 98-9 season featured images from around the ground from corner flags to pies.
Here the legendary Bovril gets pride of place

6/9/67 Division Three
Shrewsbury 2 Reading 1
Both teams just missed out on promotion this season with the Shrews finishing just one point outside the places in 3rd with the Royals two places behind them.
6/9/77 Central League
Manchester City Reserves v Coventry City Reserves
Looks like a 3-0 win for the hosts judging by the notes on this one.
A few decent players on display and the Central League Title would go on to won by the Maine Road side for the first time.
6/9/58 Athenian League
Carshalton Athletic Reserves v Maidstone United Reserves
No idea of the score for this one, but a couple of points from more innocent times.
"The club will not accept liability for accidents to spectators at the ground" and could you imagine a club official today putting his home address and phone number on the front of the programme?
"Hello, Is that Mr Levy? I just wanted to say ******!!!!"

WEDNESDAY 6th SEPTEMBER 1961
Chelsea visit Ninian Park and suffer a 5-2 defeat:
Both teams would be relegated at the end of the season. Chelsea bounced straight back in 1962/63 but Cardiff would wait 53 years before returning to the top Division. Promotion to the Premier League in 2013 came exactly 53 years to the day Cardiff last won promotion to football's top tier |

Saturday 6th September 1941
London War League
Arsenal 7 Crystal Palace 2 (Hawks, Robson)
Gate: 6,207
Early days in the 41/2 War League but Palace recovered from this mauling to finish 6th. Arsenal, playing their home games at White Hart Lane due to Highbury being requisitioned by the War Ministry, were champions.
I ask this - in the event of WW3 breaking out today, and the Emirates taken over by the ministry, would Spurs be so accommodating again? Or vice versa? Just a thought. |

Llanelly v Pembroke in the Welsh League.
Plenty of reading in this 8 page issue, including a report on the visit of Tottenham to Llanelly on Oct 16th 1922.
Spurs, fielding 8 internationals, were surprisingly beaten 2-1 in front of a crowd of 12,000.

Saturday 7th September 1963
Division III
Brentford 2 Crystal Palace 1 (Wood)
Gate: 15,883
Almost incredibly, the last ever league meeting at Griffin Park between these 2 teams.
The 63/4 season was in its early stages and Palace had started with a 1-5 loss at pace-setting Coventry. A defeat here at Brentford gave no clues that at the end of the season Palace would be promoted with Coventry and had we won either of our last 2 home matches, both lost, we'd have been Champions. The Bees ended up in 16th place. |

7 September 1946
Carlisle v Stockport County.
A very rare, flimsy, single sheet with team lines only. I think the team sheet was available on the Matchday along with the Silver Jubilee handbook. The holding company of Carlisle United had been formed in 1921.
The single sheet doesn’t appear very often and usually fetches over £100. I have seen a couple stuck inside the handbook. The handbook itself comes up regularly and fetches around £20 these days.
