Hi, I'm looking for programmes of the following inter-city matches. I'm not 100% sure if programmes were issued for all of them, so if anyone knows conclusively that a certain one didn't, that'd be handy to know.

Glasgow-Sheffield
1949-50... 24 Oct 1949 @ Bramall Lane
1954-55... 10 Nov 1954 @ Shawfield
1955-56... 16 Nov 1955 @ Hillsborough
1957-58... 20 Nov 1957 @ Bramall Lane
1958-59... 19 Nov 1958 @ Firhill

Berlin v London
1953-54... 18 Nov 1953 @ Olympiastadion

Belfast v Sheffield
(maybe billed as County Antrim v Sheffield & Hallamshire)
1959-60... 20 Oct 1959 @ Belfast

London away in Inter-Cities Fairs Cup
1954-55... 4 Jun 1955 @ Basel
1956-57... 27 Mar 1957 @ Frankfurt

Many thanks.

1955-56... 16 Nov 1955 @ Hillsborough - programme exists, £5-£8 on ebay or try programme shop at Hillsborough (PM if you want details).

1957-58... 20 Nov 1957 @ Bramall Lane - programme exists £5-£10 on ebay

1958-59... 19 Nov 1958 @ Firhill - Don't know on this one

(maybe billed as County Antrim v Sheffield & Hallamshire)
1959-60... 20 Oct 1959 @ Belfast - don't know on this one. There is Sheffield v Belfast at Hillsborough, 21/10/58

Sheffield v Glasgow goes back before WW1, one of the oldest inter city games.

I've got the following if you want scans;

24/10/1904 @ Bramall Lane
12/09/1921 @Bramall Lane
14/09/31 @ Hillsborough
23/09/35 @Hillsborough
20/09/1939 @ Belle Vue
24/10/1949 @ Bramall Lane
16/11/55 @Hillsborough
14/11/1956 @Shawfield
20/11/57 @Bramall Lane
11/11/59 @Hillsborough
16/11/60 @ Celtic Park

Also know that Bradford v Glasgow was an old inter city fixture.

Hope this lot helps

Jim Thumbs Up

Cheers, that's super, I've sent you a PM.

I've a variety of other inter-city games but those are my gaps.

Glasgow-Sheffield ran annually from 1874 to 1913 + 1919 to 1938, and again from 1954 to 1960 (floodlit revival), plus that 1949 match.

Sheffield-Belfast was a 2 match series in 1958-59 and 1959-60, played on the October international midweek on which Sheffield's XI had faced England B in 1957-58 in a match marking Sheffield FC's centenary.

Unfortunately the longstanding Sheffield-Glasgow match and the newer Sheffield-Belfast innovation were killed-off by the Football League Cup, Cup-Winners' Cup and reformed Fairs Cup which all began in 1960-61.

Glasgow-Bradford, certainly in the postwar era, was at Schoolboy level IIRC. Glasgow-London schoolboys also persisted into postwar era.

I'm not aware of a programme for Belfast v Sheffield. I didn't actually know about the game. The game in Sheffield is reasonably common though.

There are programmes for Berlin v London in 1953 and Frankfurt v London in 1957 (part of the Fairs Cup).

I've never seen programmes for Glasgow v Sheffield in 1954 or 1958.

There was also a Sheffield-Eindhoven series:

27 Aug 1946 @ Bramall Lane / 29 Aug 1946 @ Hillsborough
?03 May 1949 @ Hillsborough? / 05 May 1949 @ Bramall Lane

Definitely programmes for 3 of those: not sure about Hillsborough in 1949.

Were there any other meetings, whether in Sheffield or in the Netherlands? e.g. Sheffield appear to have visited in June 1946.

Never seen or heard of a programme for the Lausanne match in Switzerland, the only one of London's eight games that is programme-less.

A small copy of the cover of the Basel match is attached. I've only ever been able to find this small scan in confirmation of it's existence.

Thanks. Arguably the first-ever European club competition game - as tie preceded European Cup by a few months and Fairs Cup became UEFA Cup then EL.

I also have a programme for Hannover v London on 29 Sep 1954. Niedersachenstadion opening. Programme billed Lower Saxony v London.

I don't think it became a series like Sheffield-Glasgow, Sheffield-Eindhoven, London-Berlin, Sheffield-Belfast.

There are also some one-off commemorations:

23 Oct 1957 - Sheffield v England B @ Hillsborough - Sheffield FC 100th
17 May 1977 - Glasgow v Football League @ Hampden - Silver Jubilee
13 Oct 1981 - London v England @ Highbury - London FA 100th

To that you could add the Staevnet who were effectively the Copenhagen FA XI. They hosted the Football League on 5 May 1953 - unsure why or whether a programme got issued?

They then hosted the Scottish League on 11 Oct 1955 to open the Idraetsparken floodlights. I don't have a copy but there is a programme and it features on the cover of the "Scotland Programme Guide" (2006).
