Hi,

Does anyone know of a list of Scottish League XI games. Mostly played in the 1960s. I'm trying to obtain some of these but don't know exactly what there is, and what the date the games were played.

I have limited details but if anyone can help with dates it would be great (and if a programme exists even better)

1968 and 1969 Scotland v England - both these games Willie Callaghan played

1961 Scotland v Irish League (not the one dated 04/10/1961) - Eddie Connachan played. Also one around March 1962 where Connachan played as well.

Scotland U23s v the army around February 1961, played at Motherwell - George Miller was in squad

November 1963 - Rest of Britain Tournament (not sure of details but Alex Edwards played).

February 1964 - Scotland youths v Rangers, and Scottish League v Scotland. Alex Edwards played in both

March 1964 - Youth Tournament in Holland. Jim Fraser in squad

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

The Scottish League X1 games you mention go back to the 1890s.

I have a small amount in my office at home from the 1950s if they might be of any use?

Thanks for the response, sorry should have clarified, the ones I'm after are from the 60s.

I will be looking to purchase some of these, but looking for specific ones, so if you'd be able to look through any to see if those players were listed I'd be very much appreciated. Looking for the dates and more info at this stage.

Thanks

Scottish League played annually against the Football League, Irish League, and League of Ireland in the home nations series. Games against the Irish pair moved to every other year from 1962-63. There were also home-and-away games with the Italian League, in 1961-62 and 1962-63 respectively. There was hope for a 'continental series' - Football League also met Italian and Belgian leagues - that became more attractive than the Emerald Isle...

'Scotland v Scottish League' was played annually from 1957-58 to 1964-65 inclusive. They were not classified as interleague internationals. Dates are:

03 Feb 1958 prog issued
16 Mar 1959 no prog
01 Feb 1960 no prog
30 Jan 1961 prog issued
05 Feb 1962 prog issued
06 Feb 1963 postponed (no prog)
24 Feb 1964 no prog
20 Jan 1965 postponed (no prog)

November 1963 - Rest of Britain Tournament (not sure of details but Alex Edwards played).

Scotland U23 v British Army at Motherwell was 13 Feb 1961. It was a one-off game although Scotland had played the British Army regularly from the late 1940s to late 1950s... annually from 1951-52 to 1955-56 inclusive. For whatever reason the British Army had a more punctual programme versus England and Northern Ireland - they played the former each year from the end of the war to the end of national service and the latter each year from 1950-51 to 1960-61 inclusive. There was no programme for U23's in 1961.

England v Rest of UK was a special youth international at Wembley - 6 Nov 1963 as part of FA centenary. Alex Edward played. There is a programme.

Here’s some info on the March 1962 game.

Looks like Connachan might have played in this one but the details are a bit sketchy.

No problem. I've a collection of most representative games since the war - here is a list of all 1958-1972 with Dunfermline players. Note that normally a whole shadow XI of reserves was listed - for call-up if they got injured in their club games; only a couple would actually be "reserves in attendance" or "reserve travelling"... It was also very hit-n-miss whether a programme could list the reserves or not so don't take that element as comprehensive.

Willie Callaghan
20 Mar 1968 Football League v Scottish League
04 Sep 1968 League of Ireland v Scottish League
20 Mar 1969 Scottish League v Football League
18 Mar 1970 Football League v Scottish League

Tommy Callaghan
04 Sep 1968 League of Ireland v Scottish League

Eddie Conachan
06 Sep 1961 League of Ireland v Scottish League
04 Oct 1961 Scottish League v Irish League
01 Nov 1961 Scottish League v Italian League
05 Feb 1962 (Scotland) v Scottish League
21 Mar 1962 Football League v Scottish League

Jim Herriot
28 Nov 1962 Scottish League v League of Ireland
04 Sep 1963 Irish League v Scottish League

George Miller
23 Sep 1964 League of Ireland v Scottish League
+ reserve for 05 Feb 1962 (Scotland) v Scottish League

Harry Melrose
none

Alex Edwards
06 Nov 1963 (England Youths) v Rest of UK Youths
30 Nov 1966 Wales U23 v Scotland U23
+ reserve for 08 Sep 1965 Scottish League v Irish League

Alex Ferguson
15 Mar 1967 Scottish League v Football League

Cammy Fraser
6 Dec 1961 Wales U23 v Scotland U23

Jackie Sinclair
24 Feb 1965 Scotland U23 v England U23

A Smith
+ reserve for 05 Oct 1960 Scottish League v League of Ireland

Dickson
+ reserve for 30 Jan 1961 (Scotland) v Scottish League

Lunn
+ reserve for 08 Sep 1965 Scottish League v Irish League

In my experience you'd easily pick-up most if not all the above cheaply.

I don't collect Scotland U23 away on continent or any Scotland Amateur.

As noted, there are no programme for some Scotland v Scottish League games. There was also none for Scotland U23 v Wales U23 in 1964 or v West German Olympic in 1972.

I'll put any Pars players featuring for - or against - forces from 1958 to 1963 when national service ended, below.

Actually there was surprisingly just 1 serviceman for the period in question - though a lot of programmes don't list their clubs just their military ranks:

WJG Newbiggin
15 Dec 1958 (Stockport County) v Western Command
14 Apr 1959 (Crewe Alexandra) v Western Command

From experience you'd find those fairly easily and cheaply. Incidentally, he was a 'keeper and Lance Bombardier, 38 Training Regiment Royal Artillery!

04/09/1963 League of Ireland v League of Scotland
23/09/1964 League of Ireland v League of Scotland
08/09/1965 League of Scotland v League of Ireland
04/09/1968 League of Ireland v League of Scotland

Thanks. Any help is greatly appreciated
