I had a ticket for that game
I only arrived at Narita that morning, absolutely knackered from the flight and too tired to trek across Japan to the game (and then trek back for the England game in Saitama next day).
Anyway, there was an Irish couple in front of me going through immigration so I asked if they knew anyone needing a ticket. They didn't, but one suggested he take the ticket and try finding a buyer on the train or outside the ground. No money changed hands but I thought at least the ticket wouldn't be wasted and he took my address
When I got home a month later I had a lovely letter on my doormat from an Ireland fan who had been given the ticket by the couple and enclosing a cheque for £70 - a lovely and very unexpected welcome home present! |

1977 and Rovers played Portland Timbers in the USA. Our player (Graham Day) had for a while been playing for the Timbers during the summer hence this friendly.

This game in 1989 is the latest Rovers have ever played a competitive game.
We had drawn 1-1 in the 3rd Division play off final 1st leg a Twerton so this game was a winner take all encounter. Sadly Vale won 1-0 and we had to wait another 12 months to win promotion.

Saturday 3rd June 1989
Division II Play Off Final, 2nd leg
Crystal Palace v Blackburn Rovers
Result 3-0 (4-3 on aggregate) Gate 30,000
And so the 88/9 season ended in the middle of the cricket season and I missed this vital game as I was part of a cricket team that was still unbeaten and ended the season undefeated, frustratingly missing promotion to the top tier in Surrey by just a few Goddam points.
Palace, on the other hand, came back from 1-3 down to win a place in Division 1 having lost it at the start of that decade. The photo shows a man who had a huge influence, a journeyman midfielder with dodgy knees who showed that accurate passing and a cool head were just as important factors as the brilliance of Ian Wright in the run in. David Madden (here chasing Ian Miller) played the last 21 games in that season, scoring 6 goals, 5 from the penalty spot, including the second goal in this match.
Madden played only twice more, plus a few sub cameos, in the following season, before leaving for Maidstone and early retirement at 28, and ended his career with a niggardly total of 78 appearances across 9 clubs.
Referee George Courtney.
Cheers all. |

Well this is the latest in a season Rovers have ever played any sort of game. Is it a competitive one? Its the Glos Cup Final replay. Some will say it's more of a friendly. Well any fan from Bristol will testify that on the pitch these games were pretty tough. Off the pitch it was war and there was never anything friendly about them. Come on then. I am sure someone will have a later game to show.
