26th May, 1997,2003 and 2012

It is not our favourite day of the year, the only two other times I can find that we played a competitive game on this day we lost 4-2 to Wednesday and 6-2 to Manchester United, both just after WWII.

These are the play-offs Crying or Very sad Never seen a goal yet (for us!)

28th May 1924 the then first ever International for the Irish Free State (now Republic of Ireland). FIFA re-classified these as amateur games in the 1960's. A 1999 FIFA edict allowed these to be considered senior Internationals. Eventhough our opponents in all 4 games in 1924 now class them as senior games we still consider them amateur games.

Still some inconsistencies here. Although professionals were not allowed in the Olympics we did use 3 in a game v the United States a few weeks later. Only choosing home based players is sometimes given as the reason for that not being considered a senor game. However we only chose home based players in 1926 as well.

1995 and Rovers play at Wembley for the 2nd time. Sadly the result (1-2) was the same as the first time and we ended up staying in the 3rd tier for another season.

17 years old, travelled down to Wembley on my own[had been to see United in London at Fulham in 1964-told my Mum I was staying with a friend that day]. I was one if not the first in the ground when it opened at 5pm. My Dad got us two seats on the Royal Box side £4 face value he paid £50 a piece!.

The greatest experience of all my days following United, then came the Nou Camp in 1999...

Windsor Park Belfast was an unusual venue for a Dublin derby 77 years ago today.

The final part of the inaugural Football League Play-Offs - Friday night football in Birmingham as Leeds Utd and Charlton Athletic meet in a Play Off for the Play Offs Final:

A goal from John Sheridan in the 1st oeriod of extra time gave Leeds a 1-0 lead. Step forward Peter Shirtliff, hardly a renowned goalscorer, to score two goals in 4 minutes to win the game for Charlton.

Elsewhere in the Play Offs Swindon defeated Gillingham 2-0 at Selhurst Park in a Play Off Final Play of in Division 3 and Aldershot overcame Wolves 3-0 on aggregate to win the Division 4 Play Off.
I enjoy the Play Offs as a neutral but not when Leeds are involved - 5 Play Off series and ZERO wins

Two Matches same venue, Wembley

The first game is one I'll never forget, my lad captaining his Primary School, representing Sheffield United.

The Second Game is the League 1 Play-off Final is harder to remember due to the on-going celebrations with regards to the first game. What a weekend in London, with Wednesday losing to Hull on the Saturday.

The all important team sheet

Wednesday 31st May 1989

Division II Play Off Final, 1st leg

Blackburn Rovers v Crystal Palace

Result: 3-1 Gate: 16,421

Something interesting from the inside

Two crucial moments in the 1st leg - Rovers striker Howard Gayle missed a penalty which would probably have put the game beyond Palace's reach in the second leg.

And for a winger, Eddie McGoldrick didn't get many goals in his career (350 games, 20 goals) but blimey, this last minute scramble was pretty damn vital in the big scheme of things. (Taken from the 2nd leg programme)

2nd leg follows on 3rd June

31st May 2003

Real Madrid v Celta Vigo, Spanish La Liga

The Galaticos of Madrid continue to stumble towards the League title with 3 games to go, they can only manage a 1-1 draw with Celta with Raul scoring a 2nd half equalizer, which meant they had to go to Atletico the week after and win (they did 4-0)

Some decent players on show, Casillas, Hierro, Ronaldo, Makelele, Zidane, Raul, Helguero, Figo, and some long haired Scouser called Macca
