18th April 1962

Crystal Palace v Real Madrid

Friendly for opening of new floodlights

Gate: 26,000 Result: 3-4

Weather: atrocious, causing this 6-year old to miss what would have been his first match.

The Real Madrid side lined up under the lights, with the wonderful Ferenc Puskas nearest the camera.

3 days later, I went to my first match (mum relented) - Palace v Port Vale, a thrilling goalless draw. But did I care? Did I f............

Have been meaning to add something for a while, so a couple of items from bound Norwich City volumes of the 1930s, relating to yesterday and today.
First, from April 17, 1937, a typical eight-page reserve issue of the period for Norwich City Reserves 2 Barry Town 0, Southern League, attendance 3,088.

Next up, from April 18, 1931, Norwich City 4 Newport County 1, Division Three South, attendance 4,484. Both sides had to seek re-election; Norwich were successful, but Newport were replaced by Aldershot.

19 April 1947

Carlisle United v Tranmere.

A 4 page basic issue from Carlisle to cover this 4 - 2 home win.

Carlisle homes from 46/7 aren’t always the easiest programmes to get. There is a regular advert in programme monthly from somebody willing to pay a lot for this particular issue. I think he was offering £375 initially but has increased to £500. Quite a tempting amount.

Sat 19th April 1969

The day my brother got married, so I missed this one too.

Crystal Palace v Fulham

Div II promotion decider, gate 36,126; result 3-2

No apologies for showing a similar cover again, but there were few options through this decade.

Thought the league tables make interesting reading, I've often wondered how a club's 1st team can be abysmal while their reserve team are table-toppers. Anyway, Palace needed a point from this game, and went 2-0 down. Bedlam ensued during the second half revival, luckily I have a great photo to prove it as I missed it myself.

One for Sharrow. 20th April 1974 saw the promotion party in full swing at Ayresome and the players put on a show for the fans. Middlesbrough beat Sheffield Wednesday 8-0

To go along with the 28/9 Carlisle v New Brighton here is a postcard of the Carlisle team (sadly unnamed).

A faded note on the back states “the man with the bow tie is “Rock” Hetherington. During the 30s was Groundsman for Grammar School and during the 39-45 war was caretaker. Very strong, gruff character”.

I have a few of these postcards showing Carlisle team groups over the years but also have some for local non league teams. I think they are great

1973/4 was the first season of 3 up 3 down and the team who eventually went up to the top division with Middlesbrough and Luton in 3rd place was Carlisle United. It didn’t look good for Carlisle on 20 April 1974 as, at that crucial time in the season, they lost 4 nil at Blackpool with an attendance of 15,777.

Sat 21st April 1962

And so 3 days after the Real Madrid game, here I was at my first-ever match, aged 6 years, 2 months and 18 days.

Crystal Palace v Port Vale

Result 0-0 Gate: 10,519

Match 44 in the calendar, Palace finished 15th and Vale 12th. I should imagine it was as dull as dishwater, but I'm afraid I remember nothing of it.

21 April 1923

Carlisle United v South Shields

Not much to say about this one apart from the long thin format means any that turn up from this season are invariably folded.

Workington v South Shields. This was Workington’s last season in non league as they were elected to the league in place of New Brighton.
