I thought i would list some Manchester United programmes from my collection which i am convinced is the only one in existence. But ou never know

The first programme is from an end of season friendly from 1934/35
United played Plymouth Argyle in the last league game of 1934/35 and they couldn't afford the train fare home. This was confirmed by a check on the clubs minutes books
They travelled down south 2 days early and played a friendly against St Austell and split the gate receipts
This single card is the only time i have ever seen this
https://www.flickr.com/photos/63580000@N04/5904306496/in/album-72157626992471919/

The second programme is also a friendly
Played against Motherwell on April 27th 1927 this game was used to raise funds to send sick children for a day in the country to breath clean air
A 4 page programme which was offered to me by the late programme dealer Ian Hands who was going to offer it for sale at the London Programme fair about 20 years ago
I traveled to London specifically for this and was not disappointed
I have never seen another

I think it's one of the big buzzes you can get from collecting!

I do like to have the programme every game I go to, all the latest stickers and trading cards, and the badges. To be honest though. if money was tight I could stop buying these for a year, and then in a years time, still pick up all of them and probably cheaper too! Certainly the match programme I pay £3.50 for each week is readily available for less than that even just a week later!

I think there is an extra bit of satisfaction when you find something for sale, that you know is very rare, or even unique! The nervy wait for the online auction to end, or the special feeling if it is a private sale, just that you were offered the purchase in the first place!

And when you have it, you know just how lucky you are!

Even better if you can later share that item through a website forum, book, article in a programme, or just showing to other collectors. To give others some pleasure in seeing something rare or unique is also a special gift.

It's good to collect, and it's great to share. Thanks for sharing.

More than happy to share Dorking.Sharing for pleasure is what the forum is all about
This may or may not be treat for you
The first season Manchester United and Crystal Palace met was the start of the 1922/23 season in division 2
The first ever game between these two clubs was at Old Trafford on 26-8-1922 which was won 2-1 by United in front of 30,000 fans.

The return game was played on 2-9-1922 and United won 3-2 in front of 8000 fans.
The significance of this was that it was played at Croydon as Palace were still building Selhurst Park after moving out of their ground for world war 1 reasons

I always consider what to do with a damaged programme and i wouldn't hesitate to go to Eamon if something was "desperate"
However i tend mostly to leave things as they are

As this appears to be going so well i will post a little more for your amusement
Some notable firsts that may actually have more than one of these in existence. But i doubt it

First up is the first time Hull City played Manchester United in 1905/06.
Manchester United had not yet moved to Old Trafford and were playing at Bank Street,Clayton
12,000 fans are reported as watching this game
I have only ever seen this programme once
https://www.flickr.com/photos/63580000@N04/25692870365/in/album-72157665182027880/

Next is Burnley v Manchester United from 1913/14
Burnley published for the first time in 1912/13 but they were in division 2 in that season. So the first time these teams met with an official programme was this one in 1913/14

Thanks for sharing bluejames. I do also have a couple of Palace home programmes from 'The Nest' - not against Man Utd of course!

It was a quite basic ground, slap bang opposite Selhurst Station, so not all that far from Selhurst Park at all - Selhurst Park opened in 1924

No idea if this is rare or not - probably not, but it is hopefully of interest nevertheless.

It's a glossy photo (unfortunately it looks much better in person than scanned) of Palace v Man Utd from Sept 1922 at The Nest (the ground mentioned above). The overhead electrification on the adjacent rail line can be clearly seen in the background.

The annotation at the back is no more than the match details and 'Palace attack', but I still like it!

I'm obviously not a United fan, but can appreciate items of great age and rarity!

And Man United items of such rarity are worth several times more than just about most other clubs equivalent rarities. Well done!

And so we move on to today's offerings for your amusement

First up is a mystery programme
Played on December 28th 1927 we have a friendly game between Manchester United and Corinthians
As can be seen in the note with the scan this single card was a bit of a mystery. The game definately took place. It was advertised in a United programme in December and United's own minute books agreed that the gate receipts would be split.
The programme/card has no price and as we are between Xmas and New Year the printers would have been shut.It is too big to be an insert in a United programme from before this date so what is it
I can only assume that it was given out free on the day of the game
I have never seen another. The United museum do not have one but it is indeed possible that another collector has one,or possibly even two!!
https://www.flickr.com/photos/63580000@N04/7060069959/in/album-72157707424003035/

The second item today concerns Manchester United v Everton from 1990/91 season
This was the debut game for Ryan Giggs when he came on as a substitute.
This is the hand written team sheet given to the opposition and the referee
Not valuable but truly rare and a piece of history

A couple of rare gems for today

1 This is a single card for a friendly played between Blackpool v Manchester United on 14-10-1939
War had been declared and the league season abandoned
Whilst the FA organised a war league local clubs played friendly games
A truly rare programme of which i have never seen another

https://www.flickr.com/photos/63580000@N04/40453183453/in/album-72157694049032280/

2 From 1938/39 season comes an FA Cup 2nd Round,3rd replay programme played at Old Trafford between Halifax Town and Mansfield Town.If either of these teams are your club please feel free to take a scan for your records

Today i offer a couple of semi finals played at Old Trafford together with match tickets.

1
From the 1923 season comes the semi final between Bolton v Sheffield United. You will,i am sure, realise this ended up with the white horse cup final ie the first ever final at Wembley.
The programme is tough and has sold for as much as £2000 but how much is the ticket worth?
Answers on a postcard Wave Wave

2 From the 1939 season comes a pair o items that are easier to find
The programme for the game between Wolves v Grimsby is relatively easy to find but the ticket, although out there,is more difficult to find than the programme

Hi Phil

I will look through my items to see what i have,if anything but to hopefully keep you amused i offer this selection card.
It comes from the private collection of Manchester United goalkeeper Jack Mew
United played Rochdale on 15th September 1917 and Rochdale won 3-0 in front of a crowd of about 2,500
Jack had to make his own way to Victoria train station where the team met and left on 1.30pm train for a 3.30pm kick off
He had to buy his own lunch and dinner
https://www.flickr.com/photos/63580000@N04/14424087093/in/album-72157645106975701/

And the match report from report from Jack's scrapbook
https://www.flickr.com/photos/63580000@N04/46981745175/in/album-72157644708175128/

I also have the match report from the following week for the return game at Old Trafford which ended up 1-1
https://www.flickr.com/photos/63580000@N04/32934815117/in/album-72157644708175128/

You might want to go to the set marked 1917/18 and look at the newspaper cuttings as Rochdale's results are mentioned in some

Just found a bit more
In 1916/17 Jack Mew made a note of how much he earned playing for United
As can be seen on this list he got 10 bob when the teams met at Old Trafford on 2-12-1916 and 15 bob when they payed at Rochdale on 17-3-1917

https://www.flickr.com/photos/63580000@N04/14424054383/in/album-72157645136510944/
