Right, here's a question for you.
Arsenal at home in 1967/8 or 68/9 - the hooped socks were in those seasons and Radford only wore 7 then too.
So who are the opponents? They look familiar in their white shirts, which must surely be a change kit from their usual presumably red.
These are the clubs they played in those seasons who may have been in white/black away kit.
Stoke (both seasons, but not 67/8 as Radford wore 9).
Liverpool (both, but not their shirts as they always had a large badge on left breast)
Sunderland (both seasons and an extra FLC game in 68/9)
Nottm Forest (both seasons - player nearest looks like Peter Cormack but he joined Forest in 1970)
Sheffield United (67/8 only)
Manchester United (both, but surely not them as players not familiar, plus Radford didn't play in 67/8 season)
Southampton (both seasons)
Burnley (67/8 only as Radford didn't play in 68/9)
Blackpool (League Cup in Sept 68/9)
Charlton (FA Cup in Jan 68/69 - prob not due to daylight being good)
Any ideas anyone, please? Thanks again |

You’ve probably checked it Pete, but could be one of the Arsenal lnter Cities Fairs Cup games from 1969-70. Didn’t Arsenal win the trophy that year? |

Thanks, I hadn't checked that because Radford wore 9 after 68/9 and they only wore hooped socks in 67/8 and 68/9 (according to HFK).
Cheers! |

Could that be a first season Emlyn Hughes in the background? _________________ Currently disposing of my collection so please email any wants lists to [email protected].

Hi Pete
I think it's Arsenal v Liverpool.

Does look like Liverpool. Emlyn is a good call for one of the whites, but the player Radford is clashing with doesn’t look a familiar face. Could it be Peter Wall or Bobby Graham? |

Could be Peter Wall. Played nine times that season...
Mind you, he ended up at Palace so I would expect Peter to have spotted him! _________________ Currently disposing of my collection so please email any wants lists to [email protected].

Interestingly Pete mentioned the 67/8 & 68/9 seasons. Arsenal played Liverpool at Highbury in August for both of these seasons. Whilst the ground conditions and floodlights don't point to August, the English weather is of course unpredictable.
However I've found a grainy press picture from the 67/8 Arsenal v Liverpool game and the Liverpool shirt doesn't feature the Liverpool badge. Although Pete mentions the badge, it does appear the shirt didn't feature one in the 67/8 game.

Brilliant everyone, thank you for all your replies and suggestions.
Firstly, it's not Peter Wall, he was one of my heroes at Palace from 1970 onwards and arrived with little more than a short back & sides, certainly not the mop in this earlier photo. And while the other player does indeed look a bit like Nerys Hughes, I'm pretty sure it's not him either. I am fairly certain that if it was Liverpool, we'd all be 100% given who their defenders would have been. (Lawler, Smith, Yeats, Stevenson, Byrne etc). And surely that pitch wouldn't have been in August.
Sheffield United 67/8 seems to be the favourite idea I've had on Twitter and by email from a student of the game so I think I'll go with that, and the player nearest camera being David Munks. That game was played on an icy & muddy pitch, there's a clip on You Tube which someone Tweeted to me.
Here are the 2 white-shirted players blown up.
So unless someone is certain it can't be the Blades, I'm going with that.
Thank you everyone once again. |
