Interesting article in The Liverpool Echo about the origins of football shirt numbers. Apparently 25 August 1928 was the date when the players of Arsenal and Chelsea sported them for the first time. Arsenal were in the First Division , Chelsea Division Two. The FA then banned them. They were reintroduced for the 1933 Everton v Manchester City FA Cup Final to aid radio listeners to the match. The gist of the article is that Dixie Dean on the 29 April 1933 became the first high profile centre- forward with a number 9 on his back. I wonder where Dixie’s shirt ended up and it’s value now?
