Sad to hear about the death of Fred Pickering. A goal- scoring hero to Evertonians in the mid 1960s. He scored a hat-trick on his Blues debut against Nottingham Forest. I don’t think Fred, who had been carrying an injury, ever got over Harry Catterick not picking him for the 1966 FA Cup Final victory over Sheffield Wednesday. Fred considered himself fit enough to play but Harry Catterick wouldn’t risk him( no subs in those days) As we all know, Mike Trebilcock took his place and scored two goals in Everton’s 3-2 victory.

Thedoog, Fred seemed to be a hero wherever he played. Blackburn, Everton, Blackpool,. Good footage of him playing for Birmingham on YouTube. Not certain if they could come on if needed, but didn’t realise that in the 1966 FA Cup Final teams were actually allowed to name a twelth man. For the Blues it was Sandy Brown, mind you he could play anywhere, even in goal if needed. He could even score spectacular own goals( remember that cracker against Liverpool!) Someone told a story on one of the forums about a Blue slagging off Liverpool’s Ron Yeats . I think it was in a social club. Pickering overheard him and told him that he was talking a load of crap and that Yeats was a great centre-half. Seems typical of Fred.
