With it being the 40th anniversary season of Wigan Athletic joining the Football League, I have dug out my collection of 28 different home programmes from that season covering League, Cup and Friendlies.

I'm just trying to establish if that represents the complete collection of The Latics homes from that season.

Can anyone confirm please if programmes were issued for the following two re-arranged home matches that I don't have programmes from?

14/02/79 v Wimbledon

14/03/79 v Torquay

I have programmes from scheduled home matches against the above teams as follows, but these must have been postponed matches.

13/01/79 v Wimbledon

02/12/78 v Torquay

24/01/79 v Torquay

Thanks in anticipation of any replies.

Hello and welcome to the forum!
I collect, amongst other issues, complete first seasons for all genuinely new clubs. According to my records they played 23 League, 1 League Cup. 1 FA Cup & 5 Friendlies. I will have to have a look at the actual programmes and I will get back to you. My only reference to any postponed issues for 78/9 is in the aways and was against Scunthorpe. This is not to say you are wrong about home postponed, it might have been something I missed!

I`ve always been confused here.
I think I`ve got close to all of that season but cant be sure

Using the dates in "11v11" I think:
Port vale used the 22.12.78 programme for the game on 9.1.79
Wigan used the 13.1.79 prog for Wimbledon 14.2.79
Wigan used 2 programmes 2.12.78 & 24.1.79 for the Torquay 14.3.79 [my copy of the 2.12.78 has the scores written in for 14 march]
Rochdale used 6.3.79 for the 19.3.79 game
Hartlepool used the 1.1.79 prog for the 3.4.79 game but stuck a sticker over the old date [and also used a Stockport County game programme]

Aldershot have 21.3.79 on their cover but I reckon this is a simple typo - should have been April.
Scunthorpe issued a separate programme for the rearranged 1.5.79
Bradford city added an insert to the 20.1.79 programme for the rearranged 7.5.79

I await with interest corrections etc but I would be delighted not to have to hunt out any more.

Many thanks for the interesting replies and the welcome to the forum.

I've been registered since Feb 2010 and I've waited over 8 years to make my debut, which maybe some sort of record!

It appears that my original question has been answered with the following;

Wigan used the 13.1.79 prog for Wimbledon 14.2.79.

Wigan used 2 programmes 2.12.78 & 24.1.79 for the Torquay 14.3.79.

I agree there were 23 League matches, 1 FA Cup match and 1 League Cup match.

The 2 Friendlies (interestingly enough they were played during the season rather than pre-season) that I have are as follows;

11/10/78 v National Team of Zambia (hardly a regular friendly match opponent for English League clubs!)

06/11/78 v Dundee

It mentions 5 friendlies in the post above ... not sure if the other 3 home friendlies had programmes issued for them ... it will be interesting to see the feedback on that "slightfold" in due course.

Thanks again for taking the time and effort with the above replies.

I subscribed direct to Wigan Athletic that season - here is an album of programme cover scans of everything I received from the club each week.

Both homes and aways.

Following on from derby1884's and the other posts I found I had wants when I thought I was complete, drat!! Ignorance is bliss, and maybe wisdom is a longer wants list.
There are 3 aways postponed (2 progs & 1 with updating supp) and 1 home to consider. over the stock issues.
Of the 5 home friendlies the Birmingham issue is the smallest I have ever seen. If it had serrated edges I would have mounted it in a stamp album !!
So the above would seem to cover the full first season but there is one other issue. It is a pre-season away friendly at Horwich (RMI) 26/7. an A4 typed issue. It says 'Tonight history is being made as Wigan play their first game since elevation to the League.' Sometimes friendlies have a greater import.

You've just jogged my memory - I have the Horwich RMI issue but it's filed separately from the others.
Funny - as I was scanning the Wigan issues in I knew there was something missing.
Now I know!
Will upload that one soon
thanks

For the sake of completeness, I've now uploaded the away single sheet at Horwich RMI to the 78/9 Wigan Athletic folder:
