Hi, I am trying to find out when each club started producing programmes, Looking at my pre-war potential wants my list is enormous. But I am guessing certain clubs will have only started producing programmes at a particular year. Can you help me with understanding when your club started producing programmes?
I can see from the Everton collection, the earliest programme on there is 1886

Covered before Programme Monthly. Scunthorpe first was for our first ever game in the Midland League, Notts County Reserves 1912. A copy still exists. |

Crystal Palace
Right back to the very first game in 1905 (Southern League Div 2 v Southampton Reserves) there were 'programmicard's issued. These had very limited notes and the team line ups. Certainly these programmicards ran for at least a few seasons,, maybe longer.
Interestingly, the Crystal Palace ground from 1905-1914 was within the Crystal Palace exhibition grounds (a huge park of entertainment). Every Saturday that the grounds were open, there was a multi page programme listing all the various entertainments around the park throughout the day - from brass bands playing, to dancing shows, orchestral performances, and so on, and one of the many attractions in the park listed in these programmes with all the fixture details were the home matches of Crystal Palace. So whilst these weren't actual programmes, they are also of interest!
The oldest home I have is from 1921/22, but I have seen scans of a 20/21 home programme.
I have also seen scans of 1918/19 home programmes from the former Scott Cheshire collection (a massive Chelsea collection). These were little more than fixture lists plus the team line ups (not to say I wouldn't LOVE to own one of these!)
There are other Palace collectors on this forums who may be able to add more info to the above |

Chelsea's 1st programme issued was for the pre-season friendly against Liverpool on the 4th September 1905. |

Was this just after Harold gave up his season ticket after picking up an injury? _________________ http://willjam100.wix.com/wolvesindetail |

Further to what my pal Dorking has to say above, here's a copy of the front cover of a Palace "Programmicard", issued 26th Jan 1907, for the visit of Southampton in the Southern League. As you can see this was No XIX in the series but I've never seen any of the earlier ones. This is only a photocopy, I don't own the original, but I know who does and he bought it for £15. Some people have all the luck. Anyway, I thought you might like to see what one looks like.
The narrative refers to Palace's win in the Cup at Newcastle a fortnight earlier. That's non-league Palace at Football League Champions elect Newcastle.

The earliest known Brentford home is from 1904/05, at Griffin Park, versus Bristol Rovers, it's been mentioned many times before on here (I'm sure there was another thread the same as this?).
It is known that there were definitely earlier issues produced, as reports mention programmes and team cards from the late 1890's/early 1900's. I haven't seen one though and I don't think anyone else has either!
There is also one versus Luton Town in November 1904 known of too.
The earliest I have is versus Abertillery in 1914/15, just before they disbanded. |
