If anyone might be able to supply a copy of the programme for Thurrock's lfinal home game (v Kingstonian this Saturday) before they disappear forever, please let me know.

Unlikely, but you never know!

The vultures are gathering.

Back in 1985 Leyton Wingate reached the First Round of the FA Cup and were drawn away to Swansea City. That week it was expected that Swans would go under due to financial difficulties. Normally in those days if you went to an away match by coach you went with the team. On this day the team went ahead and the supporters club ran two coaches as so many 'ground hoppers' (although they were not called that in those days) wanted to come along and pick up the last ever Swansea programme. Their new stand was not even open and our coaches were met on the M4 and had a police escort bypassing the city centre to the ground where we were carolled into a fenced area. I am sure it was necessary as one young girl had a evil looking large teddy bear. Anyway we lost and I think Swansea survived.

Anyone have an insiders update on the situation? We have lost too many clubs from Essex and East London.

Sad to hear about this. Back in our Conference South days, Thurrock were considered our bogey team, and indeed from 2004 to 2009 we never beat them once in ten attempts, until Dean Holdsworth's swashbuckling Newport team of '09/10 stuck five on them on a bitterly cold December night at Spytty.

Prior to that, we'd been on the end of some wallopings from the Essex lads, including one particularly painful 0-4 home defeat that I've tried to erase from the memory bank.

For those that don't know the story, Thurrock (like ourselves) were founder members of Conf South in 2004, and had changed their name the year before from Purfleet. Hence Thurrock were known as "The Fleet."

It's a shame to see another tidy little club disappear without a trace.
County fans will certainly remember Thurrock though.

Oh, right.
Well, thanks for that.
On the off chance someone was kind enough to help me on here, the last thing I'd have done was stick it straight up on EBay.

45+ years in the hobby and the first time I've been called a vulture.

So...thanks.

Had you down as a ram! In these parts, a vulture is better than a seagull, so it could be worse, Derby.

There’s no way you’re a Vulture , derby,.. From memory , you are a Fab Four fan. The Vultures were a 1970s punk band from Up North. First LP was titled ‘The Vultures are Gathering’ Thumbs Up

Have you tried contacting Tony Flood the programme editor. His contact details are on the club website. I would be surprised if he didn’t help you out especially as you will only want the single copy for your collection. Good luck.

Sadly, Thurrock are not the only club struggling to survive. According to last nights Evening Standard this Saturday could see Dagenham & Redbridge home game against Maidenhead as being their last.

Is this just paper talk or are we about to see the start of a large number of clubs going to the wall.

All this Vulture talk made me think of the classic 70's cartoon which I can't find on Google, just this mug from different angles. Apologies to anyone of a weaker disposition....

The Vultures, l got the location wrong. Vicki pedia : A punk rock band from Newport. Lead singer was known as Wiggy. Very influential, particularly on young up and coming London band The Sex Pistols. Sid Vicious is quoted “ when l saw Wiggy on that Granada TV Programme , and he called Bill Grundy ( the presenter) a turd, l knew that’s what l wanted to do” . Apparently Wiggy fell out with his band mates after appearing on stage in Swansea wearing nothing but a Newport County dicky bow. Wiggy left the band after recording was completed for their seminal album ‘ Never Mind The Turds’ . He was last seen playing in a Herman’s Hermits tribute band in a holiday park in Fishguard. Chips, drugs & rock'n'roll Pie.
That's where it's at.

I used to smash my stylophone over the amp too, and do the windmill.
Long before Pete & his chums copied me.
