Here's an odd one?

Its a game between Berlin and London. Berlin won the game by 2-1.

It was played on 13th May, but year unknown? in Berlin at the Poststadion.

The photographer was from Budapest

I guess it was a London FA eleven, but were they professionals from London clubs or were they amateurs.

The strip looks like a West Ham type kit, but who knows?

okay...does anyone recognise any of the players if they are Professionals?

Very nice, Balti.

I've tried my Caxtons and my Rothmans without any luck.

Interested in 3 different shades of shorts in the top one (the 2 in "West Ham" shirts), and that's the London XI so looks very amateur on that basis. It's Berlin defending according the blurb on the back.

Yes I had clocked the different shorts, so you may be right.

But it looks like a fair old crowd for such a match in May?

Also, with Hungarian Press in attendance, I wonder if it was some kind of tournament?

I have somewhere read about the London F A putting out representative teams....but can I find out now?...typical.

I reckon someone will crack it. Thanks for the thoughts,

Cheers, Ian

The London Combination and the London League both put out representative teams as did The Southern League and The FA.

I have some on my Wants lists which have Millwall players listed. unfortunately I don't have any info on your item Ian.

London v Berlin matches seemed to be played quite often after the war so there is no reason to think that they weren't a fixture before the war.

Not very helpful and i can't find anything in the copies of Athletic news Annuals I have - that's not to say that I haven't missed something though!

There was a London-Berlin fixture at Arsenal on 11 March 1953. If you can find a copy of the programme or get scans of the pages, perhaps there would be a list of past fixtures between the two city's representative teams.

Good shout TheMusic - I have a copy because Gerry bowler played.

There is a list of 3 matches but these were internationals:
10/05/1930 In Berlin England 3 v Germany 3
04/12/1935 At Tottenham England 3 v Germany 0
14/05/1938 In Berlin England 6 v Germany 3

It does also mention Berlin v London on 21/11/1951 - but that is all I'm afraid. Hasn't moved us much further on - perhaps there is more in the 1951 programme..............

I note that the game was played in the PostStadion.
According to Wikipedia that would probably narrow it down to being played between 1929/30 and the Berlin Olympics six years later.
It appears it fell out of favour after Germany lost to Norway in the Olympic games there.

This is great stuff....I still think this could be 1920/30s.

Cheers,

Hello Great Barr Wolf & Westbourne.
