Game played at Maine Road, could be 1946-7/1947-8/1948-9

There are only 3 players in the photo and 2 off them have signed it as United players, so it is the 3rd player.

As United played in Red then the opponents would be Dark Blue-can anyone recognise the opposing player sandwiched in between Cockburn and Rowley.

Socks look to be a light colour Gold?, I thought it could be a Leeds United player as it looks like a healthy crowd and it is not Winter time?.

United played Leeds at Maine Road in 1945-6 in November and also in 1946-7 in April with 41,772 in the ground?.

If I had to guess a season I would say either 1946-7 but think 1947-8 more likely but by that time Leeds had gone from the First Division.

Everton a contender perhaps, Portsmouth?

Looking forward to getting a result with so many Eagle eyes on this Forum!

Could be John Willie Parker of Everton fame? The only trouble is Parker is down as not making his debut until 1951.Could also be Eddie Wainwright of Everton?

Leslie, please email it to me and I'll send it to an Everton historian not on this forum.

Did you play Leicester at that time?

Not Leicester as they had white collars - but could also be a team in change colours like Middlesbro, Forest etc.

Leslie,
would the crowd be too large for a pre season Reds v Blues ?

The unknown player could be a trialist.

At pompey the 1st pre season match during the late 40,s were full of lads on trial.

the 2nd reds v blues was normally 1st team v 2nd team

Just a thought Confused

This is a league game and i do not recognise that 3rd player. I think Everton is a good shout and Pete is asking one of his Everton contacts.

United had the same format Reds and Blues etc etc

Thank You for your thoughts nevertheless-much appreciated for taking the time to respond. Wave

It does appear to be Everton.l think they played in that kit right through to the mid 1950's. A few other names that it could be are Cyril Lello and Wally Fielding.

If it is Everton, then possibly Gordon Watson as per the link. He played in the 47/8 fixture @ Manchester, but not the 46/7 or 48/9 fixtures.

Let’s see what Pete’s Everton contact has to say or indeed any Everton followers.

Gordon Watson is a good shout Rocky.l was reading that Jock Dodds was with Everton 1946-48.Could it be Jock ? Apparently he was 14 stone. Does the player in the photo look big enough?

Jock Dodds is an equally good shout. He also played in the 47/8 fixture @ Manchester, but not the 46/7 or 48/9 fixtures.
