This is an interesting item...

A small 4 x3 inch team card issued by Hills & Saunders.

It features the Oxford University team who were FA Cup Semi Finalists that year!

By Appointment No Less!

1875 is pretty early for football.

Okay, can anyone post anything older?....I am sure you can!

Ian

Has anyone seen any other teams in this series?

I guess it is possible?

Not the same series (not even the same sport) but something similar - a card of the Oxford boat crew who took part in one of the first major transatlantic sporting events - Oxford v Harvard boat race on the Thames in 1869

The handwriting on the back of this card is my great-great grandfather so this has been in my family for 149 years. Unfortunately great-great grandad didn't leave behind any souvenirs of cup finals or England games from the 1870s - I do have a gold watch awarded to him for his services to the University Boat Race from around this time - shame he wasn't a football man!

Now, this isn't funny and certainly has nothing to do with sport, as it stands, but it concerns the death by suicide of my great great great grandfather (William Cate) on 16th February 1863. A baker by trade, his wife had died and he re-married a post-office keeper in Battersea in 1858. We don't know the circumstances but 5 years later he threw himself under a train near Wandsworth Common station - on the Crystal Palace railway line.

And so he became the first, and only, member of my family (so far) to have the words Crystal Palace on his death certificate.

And while it isn't funny, I must admit I do find it amusing, in its own way.
