Since taking early retirement, I now have the time to try and research some of my collected items which have been gathering dust over the years.

Below, is a receipt for OLYMPIAN FC who paid their annual subscription & Cup Entry for the year 1884/5 to the London FA.

Fascinating item, can anyone tell me anymore about Olympian FC, and which cup completion would it be?

Cheers,Ian

Hi Ian

Sorry I cannot add any information on the matter-I just wanted to say what a great little piece of Victorian football!, do you have any other items from this era at all?, if so perhaps you can share them? Wave

Good place to start, I think, would be with the postmark?

Lower Clapton is in Hackney, and on it's wikipedia page under SPORT it notes that Clapton FC was the original football team in the Borough having formed in 1878, so they would certainly be contemporaries of Olympian FC.

Clapton won numeros Cup competitions around the 1880s and 1890s including the London Senior Cup, the Essex Senior Cup, Middlesex Senior Cup, London Junior Cup.

I think the Essex and Middlesex Cups would have had invites, and therefore receipts, from their respective FAs, so anything with London in it's title would certainly seem a good place to start. As the London Junior Cup didn't start until 1886-87, the London Senior Cup would appear to be your best bet for starters?

Hope that helps?

Looking in some newspaper archives, on 25.10.1884 played at Kensington Oval, Old Etonians beat Olympians in the 1st round of the London Association Cup 8-0.

Olympians ground was apparently in Mount Pleasant Lane Clapton.

It looks like The Illustrated Sporting & Dramatic News may have been reporting the previous Saturdays game? Here's my source of info from The Sportsman dated 28/10.
