Picked this little lovely up from a European seller, which has an interesting story attached to it ...
The 1970 London-Mexico World Cup Rally was the first of two World Cup Rallies to be held - the motor rally started at Wembley Stadium in London on 19 April 1970 and finished in Mexico City on 27 May 1970, covering approximately 16,000 miles (25,700 km) through Europe and South America.
The event was the brainchild of Wylton Dickson, and was to mark the fact that the 1966 FIFA World Cup had been held in London and that the upcoming 1970 FIFA World Cup was to be held in Mexico. Dickson approached the renowned British rally driver Paddy Hopkirk and together they went to The Daily Mirror for sponsorship.
As well as professional rally drivers, the event attracted a number of well known people, including the footballer (and 1966 England World Cup squad member) Jimmy Greaves, who finished a very creditable sixth, and HRH Prince Michael of Kent, who failed to finish.
Here's a couple of pics of Greavesie ...

Nice one Wiggy. Funny that the 74 badge design is based on the old Jules Rimet trophy |

Yes I picked up on that too Sean. As this was 1973, the autumn before the tournament, I tried to find out when the new trophy for the '74 tournament was unveiled but had no luck.
Must admit though, it was the Jules Rimet top that made me notice it when I was having an idle browse, as neither of these badges were listed in football sections. |

Cheers buddy. I'm a big fan of the older German badges, they always seem to be of great quality. I have quite a few 'German Favourites' in my world cup collections, including these two lovely medal badges for West Germany 74 and Spain 82 ...

They are Leslie, for once my scanner liked these two!
(It hates gold / silver coloured reflective badges normally)
I scan all mine at 300pxls, but it's still a lottery as to how good they come out.
I have found a few more of these German beauties from time to time, but the sellers have refused to sell abroad, which is a bugger. I can't complain though, as I only sell to UK buyers myself. |
