Just realised that Ross County haven't been issuing progs this season (team sheets only)...Is this a first in the SPL? Also I thought it was a requirement to issue a programme?

LIVINGSTON can be included here now. Went to game last Saturday and advised that now it is only available via a Pdf download. The future of matchday programmes perhaps?

If the concept of a "football programme" is to have a future (no sure thing), it needs to, firstly, work out what it offers to the purchaser that isn't available for free online and, secondly, needs to go back to basics and remember what a programme is.

The latter sounds simple but today's 96 page glossy £3 effort is less a programme and more a strictly censored marketing tool.

If I were to head to the next Ross County match, I'd find the teamsheet a lot more useful on the day than a programme with squad numbers on the back page. But I'd be looking at things from the point of view of a one-off visitor rather than a Staggies fan.

My own opinion is that the football programme's future is as a 8-page 50p (or thereabouts) issue, free of ads.

we may not like it (I know I don't) but the fact is that times have changed.

Don't disagree. With the saturation of coverage of the game nowadays across different forms of media it does raise question of what a programme is for. As you say, an 8 pager with basics-managers notes, some club news, pen pics/article on the opposition, stats, team lines, and maybe a historical article or a past game against today's visitors etc...St.Johnstone are another club who have gone for a back to basics issue in this style.

Also agree that some of the 100 odd pagers are more of a marketing tool, although in fairness some clubs (West Brom in particular) have utilized that number of pages really well.

I write and produce a programme for a Women's team in the FA Women's Premier League - Level 3 in the Women's game. We produce a 28/32 page issue every home game with a print run of around 75. These are generally sold out most games, the programme is also issued as an electronic version which is available online after the game has finished. We usually get around 100/120 views in the week after the game.

The real reason we do things this way is to get coverage for sponsors both at the game and then online. We also have sponsors that are not local to the ground and they have access to the programme via the electronic issue, Seems to work for us so why not the bigger clubs?

Actually, the lower down the football pyramid you go, the more relevance a match programme has to the 90 minutes unfurling in front of you.

Attend any match at Old Trafford, for instance, and should you possess a smartphone (not that I do), everything you need to know about the match will be available online for you at the proverbial press of the button. Hell, you can even turn the tables and "tweet" what you see in front of you to, errr, well, I don't actually know where "tweets2 end up or how they get there. Anyway. A programme? At best a souvenir of an afternoon out.

Attend, say, Bishops Cleeve v Tiverton Town.....or New Mills v Carlisle City........or Clapton v Tower Hamlets or any such "specialist" fixture and you actually need the programme to appreciate what you experience both on and off the pitch.

Inverness didnt issue programmes a few years back but instead produced a monthly magazine. They now do programmes again.

You could probably order your prawn sandwich and a glass of chateau de Chassay (apologies to Monty Python for the last one)
