Well, this is a corker.
Newcastle players are running out on a sort of stepped track, with hay on the ground - and what looks like a bear mascot standing watching. Where on Earth could this be? It looks a bit spooky to me....
The "bear" is blown up here
Excuse my watermarking but I feel it's essential on here. If anyone would like them unwatermarked in their inbox, please give me your email details.
Thanks as always. |

No numbers on shirts so probably 20s also, that strange entrance walkway, bear/pussy mascot and the design of many fans' hats, as had me Googling for a tour of the States during said roaring decade... |

Hi Pete,
Superb photos!
Remind me however, are we guessing at Newcastle, or is that given?
Where did you exhume this corker from?

Apart from the 1933 Cup final. First used by Arsenal in 1928-9 I believe but as with most innovations, the FA got the sulks and quickly banned their use but that's probably a subject matter best left to another day!
It is those steps that intrigue me - rising from the depths straight on to
the pitch, which sees me side with a tour match.
However, with the spectators looking dressed for late autumn or early spring at best, plus what looks like hay on the touch lines which was probably protecting the playing surface, that tends to throw a spanner in the works.
All Newcastle tour matches from 1902 to 1932 were in May/June. |

Don might have a point with a USA tour (if football teams did that in the 1920s?)Looks a bit like Felix the Cat, a cartoon character from the 1920s, Felix was adopted by US Navy Bombing Squadron Two as their mascot. If it is not the 1920s,, could there be a link with American forces based in GB in World War two? Felix was also the mascot for some college sports teams in America. I personally miss the days when you used to wake up on a Saturday morning and say to the missus,, l think I'll go to the game today dressed as a cat/bear.l Nowadays it's all a bit too pre - meditated when fans turn up dressed as pork pies or bananas (at the cricket) because they have been told to.Bring back spontaneity l say! |

A wild guess would suggest Sunderland fans on the way to either of
their two semi-finals against Burnley or the final with Villa during their
unsuccessful 1912.13 FA Cup run? |

Getting back to the original photo......
Baltimore: my contact bought 1200 negatives and has had them all developed. They all involve Newcastle Utd in the 20's and 30's but don't have any names, dates or match details with them so there's a mass of detective work involved. I'm trying to help.
Flaming Pie: I'll mention the possibility of it being an overseas tour. Most of those were to Eastern/Central Europe and from personal experience it can be pretty cold there in April/May so it's possible hay was used on frozen or part-frozen pitches. Similarly in North America it's cold there too at that time of year.
DQ: thanks - not sure but do those "steps" go up or down?
Westbourne: where did you get these photos from? The Sunderland one is helpful and I'll suggest that to him.
I'll contact my man now and throw some of this at him.
Cheers all. |
