Fans on the spot for footie memorabilia
Collectors and bargain hunters found a feast of football memorabilia at a weekend fair.
A Wolves programme dating back to April 1945, with W. Wright in the No 10 position, was one of the prized offerings, on the shelf for £55.
This was an outing in the forward line for legendary Molineux and England defender Billy Wright who scored twice in a 3-0 win over Cardiff City.
It took pride of place among literally thousands of programmes, badges and other football artefacts at the fifth Big Midlands Football Memorabilia and Programme Fair at Stafford Rangers Social Club.
The event boasted 18 stands. “That’s a good number for this sort of fair,” said organiser Andrew Bowler. “And we have had a good turn out of visitors, which makes it all worthwhile putting on.
“The thing about collectors is that credit crunches and recessions don’t affect them. They come along and if they find something they want they have it.”
One of them was Frank Whitehouse, who travelled all the way from Coseley on public transport to get there.
“I have been collecting football and speedway badges since the age of 14,” said the 63-year-old. And I’ve got about 8,000 so far.”
That still didn’t stop him buying a few more on the day, including an Albion reproduction badge for his mate and a couple of charity badges for the Stanley Matthews Foundation.
“I love browsing round these fairs and although I rely on public transport – it was bus, train and foot to get here today – I manage to get to quite a few in the Midlands and there is always something to buy that I haven’t already got.”
Collector and dealer Kelvin Weatherer, 53, from Uttoxeter, had a stall selling programmes including the oldest on show, Wolves v Cardiff City on Saturday April 21, 1945.
“I have been a Wolves supporter for 42-years and I am a season ticket holder,” he said. “I have built up a collection of around 6,000 Wolves home and away programmes, all different.”
Kelvin, who has organised a similar event at Molineux on March 29, added it was quite a good attendance at the fair.
“Whether it’s good for the stallholder depends on whether he’s got what people want.” David Derry, 50, from Rugeley, was out buying for his wife Beverley, a Blackpool fan, and certainly found what he wanted. “I managed to get three programmes from the 50s which I know she hasn’t got,” said David, a Hednesford Town supporter who also looks after the club shop.
“Two were of Blackpool playing at Villa and the third when they visited Stoke in 1950. I paid £36.50 for the three, that’s about average. There is a very good selection of badges and programmes here today, it’s a very interesting fair.”
