Still sorting through my ton of signed stuff, I've spent a few days identifying photos from a scrapbook dating 1955-1959.

One is signed by a J. Hutton.
On the contents sheet, the original owner has marked it as Joe Hutton - Crystal Palace.
I cannot find any J. Hutton that played for Palace and the only Joe Hutton I can find on Google turned out for Reading, Ayr, Stoke, Gillingham & Millwall.
Is this the same guy and what, if any, is the Palace connection?

Hopefully Pete or Dorking can throw some light on this.

Any help gratefully received.

Interesting and the colours match with CPFC to a degree for a good many years, 1930's into the 40's - although generally not with black & white hooped socks. We also wore white & black in the relevant years (mid 50's) but the shirts had a chest badge and a claret & blue trim on necks & sleeves - not evident here.

And - nobody called Hutton ever played for Palace as Wikipedia suggests.

In Hutton's time we played Reading 1949-51, Gillingham 57/8 and Millwall 58/60. He may well have played for one of them against Palace. However re Reading - he only played 8 times for them, including twice in 1949/50 (v Port Vale & Notts Co). He didn't play for Reading before then.

The other thing is I'm pretty sure it's not Selhurst Park - we don't have a large white wall like that, most of our perimeter was fencing with advertising hoardings on.

Our friend Nutfield Priory may also have some input but I'd be amazed if he can add much to this.

Cheers Pete, the mystery deepens.

Thanks for that too paulobee, that was the site where I originally got confused with no mention of Palace.

Part of me wishes I wasn't trying to be so thorough! Sherlock

At first it reminded me of little Joe Hutton, who played for stoke City up to the end of season 1956-57. I have checked my record books and the dark black hair certainly matches well the photos of the team that I have.
Strip is a mystery, my initial thoughts were Preston, but that does not fit in.
However, Joe was transferred from Ayr United with one of my favourite players Bobby Cairns and on October 20th, 1956, I stood behind the Stoke end goal and watched as Ted Burgin dive to his right and save a penalty taken by Cairns, low down by his right hand post. Thank goodness for the help of record books, together with a good memory.

I would say it is Joe Hutton, but the game is a mystery.

Oh yes, he usually wore number 10 when he turned out for the Potters.

Joe played for Ayr United 1952-57 and this is their kit in that period

A perfect match.

What Crystal Palace has to do with it is anyone's guess!

I think that Ayr kit nails it.

Here's a slightly grainy pic of Mr Hutton in his days at Gillingham

Joe Hutton of Ayr United it is then..........no idea what the Palace link was about, so I assume the original owner just made an error. Fortunately everything else in his scrapbook so far has checked out to be accurate with authentic signatures. Some real beats in there which I will show soon.

Excellent work guys.
Thanks to all of you for your input. Clap
