Just been contacted by a good friend of mine about an 1897 F A Cup Final ticket that has been found in some papers from a person that has recently passed away.
He has asked me for a valuation, which I will happily give to him once I have got some advice.
I have never seen a ticket from this final before but will be meeting up with the new owner of the ticket in the next couple of weeks to take a look at it.
A year or two ago I would have happily quoted a figure of between 2-3 thousand pounds for it, but I am not so sure that is the case now.
I would love to have some guidance from someone on the forum that may be able to give me a current valuation for it
many thanks

Strangely enough this is the second time the 1897 FA Cup final has come up on the forum this week.

I wonder if there's the possibility that the ticket is also a reproduction (I'm not casting aspersions, but we all know how hard it can be to be certain, particularly with very old tickets)

Hi Seand, Totally understand your comments regarding the authenticity of the ticket, I too was following the 1897 Cup Final programme, wondering if it was genuine or not, and as I had never heard of the Jackdaw reproduction in 1971, was considering taking a chance on buying it myself, glad I never now. I have been sent a scan of the 1897 ticket, I am pretty sure it is genuine, it has the raised embossed motif on it, which is very difficult to fake, I have got a meeting next month at the Crystal Palace, the guy who`s family own the ticket live around the Crystal Palace area, and is coming to the meeting to show me it.
Obviously I will contact an auction house for a valuation as well but was just wondering if there were anybody on here who specialises in collecting tickets and could give me their valued opinion.

Not a collector of these myself, but if you could find the results (price realised) for these, it might be a starting point

Hi Dorking I have checked the past prices these tickets have sold for and they consistently sold for around the 2 thousand pound mark.
Unfortunately the most recent sold ticket which was from from the 1895 final went for just 800 pounds, so is 800 pounds now a more accurate valuation, it probably is as prices for high end tickets and programmes have dropped considerably over the past couple of years.

I would agree, 800-1000 probably most accurate on recent evidence.

1895 was also a Villa Final

Some of the sports auctioneers who post on here might have an experienced opinion.

Thanks again Dorking, The Guy who owns the ticket might want to sell it, so I would like to give him my honest opinion,, I will probably recommend that he sends it to auction and puts a decent reserve on it to cover himself.
