After the previous success of my request for help, can anyone confirm if the attached are from Blues games and, if possible, the opponents.

I know that they are not Villa players but, as they are stamped on the back as Birmingham Post and Birmingham Mail, I assume that they are from the Blues.

Any help, gratefully received.

Yes, same team defending - stripe down shorts, dark socks with white tops. Same keeper in both - is it Merrick?

Attacking team have hooped socks of a different colour and are presumably in red shirts.

That's if it's St Andrews?

What size are they please?

One contact says could be St Andrews - could be Merrick in goal - but..... Blues never wore shorts with a stripe on. And he doesn't recognise the usual Blues No's 2, 3 and 5.

Lots of keepers looked like these views of Merrick to be honest. So his opinion is it could be St Andrews as a neutral venue for a cup replay.

I've asked another Blues contact.

Looks like Everton ( stripe on shorts) in the 1950s.Could the keeper be the great Ted Sagar.? He retired in 1952.

Thanks again. That would make sense if it was St. Andrews as the Birmingham Post would be unlikely to have a photographer down the opposition goal.

Can advise that Everton never played at St Andrews (or anywhere else) as a neutral ground from 1949/50 to 1959/60.

So if Everton were playing at St Andrews it would be against Birmingham and in that case Birmingham would be the team attacking in socks they never wore. The No 10 in the top photo anyone? Not a Blues player, according to my contact.

Part of me wants to know what the details of these photos are, but part of me is pretty impressed that it's stumped the guys on here. There's so much knowledge exhibited amongst this group that to "beat it" would be a surprise!

My second Blues contact doubts it's St Andrews and he's a collector of ground photos so I go with him on that.

Bloomfield Road huh? Interesting. Would the Birmingham Post & Mail have gone there?

A mystery but all good fun.

Could it be Walsall's Fellows Park? Walsall wore red shirts, white shorts and red and white hooped socks 1950 to 1957.
Away at present so can only view the pictures on my phone rather than on my PC screen so struggling to take a stab at any players names.

I did wonder that about Walsall but don't think the socks (as worn by the No 10) are red and white. If his shorts are white, the socks aren't.

I must admit I rely a lot on Historical Kits superb website but they aren't infallible, nor can they carry every one-off variation.

Fair enough Pete. Just to add though that the no.10 has a slight look of the prolific Tony Richards about him. Tony lived six doors up from me in Truro Road, Walsall and they look like his ears!

Could the team in the hooped socks be Charlton Athletic?
