I've bought some lovely Chester photos from the late 50's but they don't have much info on their backs, other than a Chester Chronicle stamp.

Using Historical Kits brilliant website I can put a season on them, roughly, but sometimes the opposing kits and faces just aren't familiar enough for me to identify.

The one here is an example and I know how you guys love a challenge so can anyone please ID the team in white shirts & black shorts? It's at Sealand Road so Chester were at home in their green & yellow kits with hooped socks which they wore in Division 4 in 1959/60 & 60/61. I've enlarged the 3 visiting defenders below the main picture.

With thanks as always for looking and doing your best to help. Before any of you say "could it be Palace?" - no, it couldn't. By then Palace had the claret & blue band round their chests and also never had the white stripe on their shorts. But I must admit, my heart was racing for a moment!

Good shout, Kenners, although Vale wore gold & black stripes in those seasons. They may have had to change kit though and it could be a gold stripe on the black shorts. But............

One slight problem - the 2 clubs didn't play between 1958/9 and 1965/6. Probably rules them out as Chester didn't wear green & yellow till 59/60.

Cheers

Sort of but according to HFK the BPA shirts didn't have a badge - but I stand to be corrected on that one, HFK isn't perfect.

Cheers

Possibly Bury but they didn't have any trim on their shirts allegedly, and it would have been blue and not black shorts.

Yes, could be any competition although the crowd is fairly healthy.

Tonight I'll list all the oppo Chester played in 59/60 and 60/1. It might trigger something.

Thanks, Pie.

Thank you Capetown and Rocky - you can be 100% sure it's Stockport County in the early 60's. The keeper is Harold Lee and 2 of the defenders are Bob Murray and Ken Hodder.

Thanks again everyone.

Hi Pete

You dont happen to have a picture of Chester v Rochdale Feb 1961?. That was my Rochdale away debut (as a spectator, not a player).

Not yet - but watch this space - it's a fruitful supply and I don't know when it'll dry up.
