yes they did but it was in season 1926-7 and it took 3 attempts!

first game at Reading on 8th January 1927 was 0-0 with 28,961, replay at Old Trafford 4 days later ended at 2-2 with 29,122 turning up so it went a 3rd match at the neutral Villa Park and this time Reading won 2-1 with just 16,500 making the effort to turn up.

Reading went on a giant killing run, here are some of the "In Memoriam Cards" printed back then to mock United and several other clubs they booted out of the cup as well as the programme at the Villa.

Is that what use to happen?, the 2nd replay and more if needed were played at neutral grounds?. I'm a 90s child so all I can remember is after the replay it's penalties. I am aware that there used to be replay after replay until someone won but I just thought it went back to the first ground.

Stoke City battled with Bury in the mid 50s over 5 games in I think the 3rd round. They played home and away and then further games took place at Anfield, Goodison ad Old Trafford. It took almost 9 and a half hours to settle the tie and by then Stoke were raring to go again in the next round.

That Arsenal team were quite good at cup-tie marathons, the following year in 1980 ...

Semi-final: Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool (Hillsborough)
Replay: Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool (Villa Park)
2nd Replay: Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool (Villa Park)
3rd Replay: Arsenal 1-0 Liverpool (Highfield Rd)

Thank you Leslie for the sight of the match programme played at Old Trafford. The programmes for the games on the neutral grounds are really hard to find and that is the first time I have seen images of this particular one. It was immediately before I started to watch the Potters and the names of the City side are all familiar to me. I cannot believe that the competition has lost a lot of its appeal. Maybe its an age thing.

Longest ever FA Cup tie
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2009/nov/21/oxford-city-alvechurch-longest-fa-cup

All six programmes were on EBay a while back sold as one batch. With newspaper reports. Wish I'd bid but it was one of those where one hums and heys and, before you know it, the lot has gone.....
