Sad news today, aged 71, the legendary Gary Sprake is no more. I guess we all have stories to tell, be it, for example, clangers dropped or left hooks thrown, but nearly 400 league games in the mix with 37 Welsh caps. He must have been a pretty good keeper!

RIP Gary and thanks for the memories.

So sad, and as you say, so many memories - not least of which was the Kop singing out the song "Careless hands" after another well documented error led to a Liverpool goal in the 1960s. A very athletic keeper, he was error prone, but his good qualities obviously outweighed the odd slip up.

Did you realise that Gary came from the same village in South Wales as Jack Kelsey?
Winch Wen, on the western outskirts of Swansea.
That is some coincidence - such a small community producing two such good international keepers!

One of those iconic players when I was growing up.

Later on didn't he spill the beans on Revie's bribery antics ?

Just read this.

Gary Sprake, Bowie, Prince Buster, Paul Kantner, Gene Wilder, Ronnie Corbett, Terry Wogan etc etc. All names I grew up with.

I don't know about the rest of you but it certainly brings it home to me how bloody short life is.

And what an insidious bugger that procrastination is.

Part of that Leeds side that everybody hated, but admired at the same time.
It's a pity that the only footage Sky dug out was a clip of him walking up his garden path and not a great save.
It's been a terrible year for losing legends and this is another one.
RIP Gary.

Of course Sky wouldn't have any actual footage of him playing.

Didn't you know that they were solely responsible for inventing football as recently as 1992 and anything before that was irrelevant ? Laughing

I'm often reminded of this when discussing European Cups and First Division Championships with my learned local rivals..... Sad

RIP Gary
