I won a batch of West Bromwich Albion photos at auction recently and this one was among them. The others were from 1968 (Astle, Fraser, FA Cup celebration) but this one has nothing on the back and I hoped it was Albion playing away in change kit (red & white?) at a lower division club. Looks like the bloke in the net has just scored past a despairing keeper.

They played at Colchester in their 1968 cup run - could this be Layer Road? The (all blue?) Colchester kit doesn't match on Historical kits though in 67/8.

Albion also played at Portsmouth in that run and the kit just about matches but it can't be Fratton Park surely and that isn't John Milkins in goal.

My regular Albion contact says he doesn't think it's Albion away so does anyone on FPC have any ideas please?

All help gratefully received, as always. Thank you.

I'm probably way off track, but my first thought was Jimmy Husband of Everton. Having looked up that season, they played at Southport and Carlisle in the Cup. Obviously not Southport, but I can't find historic Carlisle kit to check.

The one in the middle that Mike thinks is reminiscent of Eric Redrobe is a keeper and remembering my old trade cards of the late 60s could it be Fred Else which would make it either Barrow or Blackburn, and much more likely the former so Holker Street?

Right, thanks lads, I have some more info for you.

My first instinct was "Barrow", as it happens, and I hoped that Albion had played a cup game there - but they didn't.

Then I thought Colchester and Albion played there in 1968 but as MGM says above, and as my Albion customer says, it's not that game.

As KJD says, the bloke in the middle must be a keeper, the bloke in the net has either scored or is following up someone else's effort, and the player on the post must be a defender. The crowd are almost on the pitch so it must be a lower league club or even non-league.

Now, the details I have are that these photos come from the Ken Kelly Collection - he was a sports photographer from Birmingham who specialised in cricket but also did football and rugby. So maybe it's a midlands club playing away somewhere?

And maybe that is Fred Else when at Barrow (148 games, July 1966 to Summer 1970).

So how about Barrow v Walsall? There were these 3 games between the 2 clubs at Holker Street and Walsall scored in each game.

23.3.68
23.11.68
23.2.70

Having suggested that, Historical Kits sort of contradicts it but hey-ho, it might be a start.

Thanks again all.

Alfreton v Barrow FA Cup 1969-70?

Thinking it has to be non-league as even then most league grounds
would have not just had barriers around them.

If that is Fred Else in goal then it makes sense...
