A new month, and we start with a quiz!

1st May 1948

Friendly Match

Att: ?

Crystal Palace 3, Aberdeen 0

Inside is a brief quiz on Scottish football and I show it here. Bear in mind this was prepared by a London football club in May 1948. I shall print the answers in a day or two. No prizes, but kudos to the bloke with most right. Mr Nutfield, please don't crib!

A second one today as I have a nice photo to add:-

1st May 1957

Football League, Division III South

Att: 22,627

Crystal Palace 1 (Pierce), Torquay United 1

One of the biggest games in Torquay's history as victory would have given them the Div III South title and promotion to Div II for the only time in their existence. Barry Pierce spoiled the party and Ipswich went up on goal average (1.87 v 1.39). And they were league champions within 5 years.

Photo shows Vic Rouse collecting from Gulls' winger Tony Collins, a future Palace player and one of the first black footballers around - and later a successful coach and manager. Jack Edwards is the Palace defender.

01/05/90 English Schools F.A. Individual Schools Trophy Final

Campion H.S. v Cowes H.S. at Goodison Park.

The Liverpool school were far too strong on the day and ran out comfortable 4-0 winners in front of around 400 people sat in the middle tier of the main stand at Goodison.

Included in the Cowes line-up are Lee Bradbury - later of Pompey, Man City, Palace et al, and Gary Rowett, now Birmingham City manager after a playing career at Blackpool, Everton, Derby and others.

Not sure if any of the Campion side went in to the professional game. The name Jeffers catches the eye in their team list though.

Ticket:

Hi Pete

For once I am unable to give you the attendance, local paper report does not give one, not even an approx attendance.

Mr Nutfield will not be entering your quiz for obvious reasons.

Forgot to state that Gaillard 2, and Kurz were the Palace goalscorers

Been a bit absent of late, so here's a second one for today:

01/05/37 Basingstoke Town v Cowes (Hants League Division 1)

Last game of the season and Cowes had already been crowned champions.

The week before the above match, Cowes captain Bert Beauchamp receives the Hampshire League trophy at a packed Westwood:

2nd May 1949

Jack Lewis Benefit Match

Att: ?

Crystal Palace 2, Sunderland 0

Jack Lewis joined Palace in 1938 from WBA, played through the War and regularly after despite some injuries. A wing half but often used elsewhere. Signed for Bournemouth a few months after this benefit match in which a Sunderland side including Broadis, Watson & Hudgell (according to the programme) were put to the sword by a Palace side who finished 6 points clear at the foot of Div III South. Here's Jack about 10 years earlier:-

130 CPFC peace-time appearances, 5 goals

51 years ago - all in aid of a good cause.

Scrappy single sheet with nothing printed on the reverse - but I've never seen another copy of this one for sale anywhere down the years, so I won't complain about the annotations!

Bromley finished 4th in the Athenian League with their Reserves winning the Reserve Section

Six page gatefold issue. Out of interest I'd like to know the score if anyone has a source?

03/05/64 Ryde Sports v Ex-Pompey (charity friendly)

Eight page programme with pen pictures of plenty from the Pompey championship teams, including Jimmy Dickinson. No clues as to who actually played though, the team lists were left blank and are un-annotated.

4th May 1956

"Special Match"

Att: ?

Bexleyheath & Welling v Crystal Palace

End of season match arranged as part of the deal which took Ken Morgan to Palace. He appears at No 7 on the team listing as shown below, and Gordon McDonald, at No 2, is another ex B&W player. I don't think Morgan played any 1st team games for Palace, although co-incidentally there is another Ken Morgan who played 1 league game for Palace in Nov 1955, having signed from Northampton.

And at No 10 in the Palace line-up is the wonderful Johnny Byrne, 9 days short of his 17th birthday. He made his league debut the following October and went on to make 259 appearances in all with 101 goals. Much more could be said about Johnny who lit up Selhurst Park for 6 years until he went to West Ham in 1962, by which time he'd become the first Div III player to play for England.

66 years ago (1949/50 season) and an Inter League match between the Fylde District League and the Blackpool and District Amateur League.

The match was played at Blackpool’s Bloomfield Road ground.

The programme is a 4 page issue with team line-ups across the centre and adverts on the back cover.
