59 years ago (1956/7 season) and a relatively scarce single sheet for a Central League fixture between Blackpool reserves and Burnley reserves.
Blackpool were still issuing full programmes for reserves matches during this season, but towards the end of the season single sheets were issued for the Burnley game and the fixtures against Blackburn and Newcastle.
Blackpool won this one 3-0.

A couple from Leyton Orient's only first division season.
While the first team were drawing 1-1 at home to Blackburn (which still left them 6 points adrift at the foot of the table), the young'uns were down on the south coast at Hastings United., for which the most basic of teamsheets was issued.

20th April 1963
Portsmouth 3 Leeds United 0 - Div 2
Att. 7,773
Not many tuned up to watch and Leeds didn't turn up to play either. Barton, Gordon & McCann with the Pompey goals
Due to the big freeze Leeds still had 8 games to play after this game, they were on a good run having won the previous three games and went on to win the two after this also
Lovely little pocket size issue...
20th April 1980
Ex-Players & Friends of Leeds United v Scottish Select
Not sure if that means ex-friends too?!
Large stapled newspaper issue full of adverts

21st April 1945
Football League, South
Att: 6,492
Crystal Palace 6 (six) (R Ferrier 3, Kurz 2, Betts), Brentford 1 (D Thomas)
In the absence of any photos of hat-trick man Ron Ferrier, (see below), I share with you a portrait of Palace full back Ted Harding, for whom this was an early appearance but who became a mainstay of the defence in the post-war years.
Incidentally, note that it's Ron Ferrier at centre forward and Harry Ferrier at left back, both on loan for this game. Although an unusual surname, I can't find a familial link between them. Ron (b 1914 in Cleethorpes) played for Man Utd, Grimsby and Oldham; Harry (b 1920 in Ratho, near Edinburgh) for Barnsley & Portsmouth where he won some nice medals, and non-league for Gloucester City. Does anyone reading this know if they were related? |

71 years ago (1944/5 season) and a Football League Northern Section 2nd Competition fixture between Manchester City and Blackpool.
The programme is a 4 page issue with plenty of notes, fixtures and team line ups on the back page.
Blackpool won 1-0 with Worrall scoring the solitary goal.
The gate was 9,500.

82 years today - the 1934 Amateur Cup Final held at the sadly soon-to-be-no-more Boleyn Ground.
4 page programme issued along the lines of standard Hammers' issues from the era. Notes on page 2, lineups on page 3, Hammers' fixture lists on the rear cover. Not a bad programme but no special effort gone into producing something unique for the occasion.
Dulwich Hamlet won 2-1....once again, if anyone knows the attendance for this game, please let me know.

What a wonderful advertisement. Who could resist?
Pipedream of mine has always been to somehow publish a book that captures social history via advertising in football programmes from, say, 1930 to 1970.
I can picture the final offering in my head but time, money and inertia has always been the stumbling block! _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

It's a cracker isn't it. I'd buy your book!

22nd April 1959
Football League, Division II
Att: 13,976
Liverpool 3 (Morris, Liddell, Arnell), Scunthorpe United 0
The last home game for the Pool in that season with the lowest crowd of the season and the visit of Scunny - both sides at either end of the table but safe and secure for 59/60. A nice little prog despite the SOF which personally doesn't bother me a bit but I know it bothers some. These 2 sides were together in Div 2 for 4 consecutive seasons with Scunny getting only 2 points from their 8 league games. They haven't met since the last of the 4, 1961/2.
I don't have photos of the 3 scorers but here's inside right Jimmy Melia, the Liverpool top scorer with 19 at this juncture.
And on the "cracking advert" theme, here's one from this programme

Cracking ads, lads.
I had in mind a three volume set
1) Retail
2) Industrial
3) for want of a better descriptive noun, "booze"
Ever noticed the sudden proliferation of advertising for Chinese restaurants in programmes of the late 1950s?
Or how many radio/TV shops also offered bicycles for sale in the late 1940s?
See, there's a story there, however mundane it might be! _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

How about a new thread - "Adverts in Programmes" or some such? |

Surprisingly, or perhaps not, there are members on here thinking along the exact same lines as I have for some time.
When I look through old programmes and spot an interesting advert I sometimes scan it just for interest sake.
I started a folder a while back with adverts for ales and beers with the intention of starting a thread on here.
I also started a collection of adverts for bus and coach companies that I remember when I was a lad before everything was nationalised.
Perhaps it's time to start the thread which can be added to ad infinitum when we come across old and interesting ads. |

57 years ago (1958/9 season) and a Lancashire Senior Cup semi final tie between Blackpool and Everton.
The programme is just a standard single sheet, similar to those issued for some reserve games, and is an extremely hard one to acquire.
Everton won 2-1 but I don’t have Blackpool’s scorer noted. If anyone happens to know please drop me a PM.
Everton went on to play Liverpool in the final at Anfield where they lost 1-0.

Sky would have been beside themselves over this one.
Massive game at the top of the table as the top two met at Maine Road.
City were a point behind the Rams but this was their final game of the season - Derby still had one left, at home to Liverpool.
So City had to win and hope for the best.
And win they did, 2-0, in front of a huge crowd of 55,023.
Then the long 9 day wait to see how the Derby v Liverpool game would pan out....

22nd April 1960
NABC game at Elland Road
England Boys v Scotland Boys
Next one only posted due to the bizarre Top Ten that used to appear in Football League Review
22nd April 1969
Everton 0 Leeds United 0
59,000 there to watch Leeds on their way to the Division 1 title
And finally because it takes me back to my youth and I quite like their programmes from the time....
22nd April 1972
West Brom 0 Leeds United 1 (Giles pen)
39,724 at the game, Leeds giving themselves a chance of the title and a potential double, have to wait and see what happens when Steve posts his Derby v Liverpool in 9 days time. That said Leeds will still have a game to go at Wolves and if the League play fair and don't force us to play it on a Monday evening 48 hours after the FA Cup Final we should be okay

23rd April 1955
Football League, Division III (South)
Att: 8,788
Southampton 2, Crystal Palace 2 (Andrews, Belcher)
Palace rose to the giddy heights of 20th/24 in this campaign largely due to the efforts of Jimmy Belcher, the ex West Ham inside right, who top-scored with 12 goals from 38 games. He's shown far right here, with Alex Greenwood and Frank Hearn who didn't play in this game - in fact, they only played in 10 games between them this season.

24th April 1948
Friendly Match
Att: ?
Redhill 4, Crystal Palace "A" Team 3
A double-header for hosts Redhill as their reserves hosted Hitchin Town reserves in the Athenian League reserve section at 3:30, and then a Palace "A" team in a friendly at 6:30 pm. Luckily the result is printed in a Palace end-of season friendly programme, more of which on 1st May!
Palace's "A" Team played a whole season of friendlies in 1947/8, about 40 in all, winning some in double figures but at one stage losing 5 in a row. |

Firstly, apologies for being a day late with this one. Sold it ages ago and kept the pictures to post when the date came round, then forgot! It ties in with a thread from a short time ago with regard to beam-backs...
23rd April 1969
AC Milan 2 Man Utd 0 - TV relay
European Cup Semi-Final 1st Leg
Att. Would be interested to know?
Back to today...
24th April 1997
FA Youth Cup Final 1st Leg
Leeds United 2 Crystal Palace 1
Leeds United: Boyle, Jones. Crystal Palace: Harris
Att. 6,649
Fast-forward three weeks and a 1-0 away win in the 2nd leg clinched the trophy for Leeds United
