26th January 1952

Football League, Division III South

Att: 4,666

Walsall 3, Crystal Palace 0

Laurie Scott joined Palace as player/manager in October 1951 after long and sterling service with Arsenal and England. He's seen here discussing tactics (or maybe, the "one that got away") with his new charges who are rapt in attention, devouring his every word. 3 months later Palace travelled to Fellows Park and got thrashed by the eventual divisional wooden-spoonists, Palace ending in a lofty 19th.

81 years ago (1935) and a 2nd division fixture between Brentford and Blackpool.

The programme is a large style 12 page issue with about 50% adverts but also with plenty of reading. The cover is so busy with adverts that there is no actual date of the fixture or opponents shown.

Brentford were 3rd with Blackpool 2 points behind in 5th at the start of this fixture, but Blackpool failed to close the gap going down by 2 goals to one.

Doherty scored Blackpool’s goal in front of 13,087.

There is an interesting club comment about the upcoming match away at Tottenham informing fans that they could not apply for tickets in advance as Tottenham "do not reserve seats in advance". Times have changed!!

HFS Loans League 26th January 1991 Stalybridge Celtic 2 Chorley 1

That's one, of six, I have missing for that season. A nice clean issue too!

They were large and a little flimsy as well. Nice to see it. Smile

Yes, lovely clean issue without folds, writing, marks or tears.

God knows how it survived like that especially with it being a larger format than some programmes.

It has to be one of my best condition pre war Blackpool aways.

I wish they were all like that.

Ties in nicely with the thread covering this competition.

Airdrie 0 Derby 0 (att: 16,000).

For whatever reason, the second leg at the Baseball Ground didn't take place until April 26th! A gap of three months. That must be some kind of record.

1974 and a 2-1 defeat against Hamilton Academical who eventually finished 3rd behind Airdrieonians and Kilmarnock whilst Stenhousemuir finished 15th (out of 19).

The programme, which IIRC was edited by Alan Dick, was certainly one of the better ones in Scotland at this time and, as indicated on the cover, won an award in Ian Runham's Wirral Programme Club survey the season before.

65 years ago (1950/1 season) and an FA Cup 4th Rd tie between Blackpool and Stockport County.

The programme is a standard 8 page issue.

Blackpool had met Stockport many times before the war but this was the 1st post war fixture between the two clubs and it would be another 30 years before they met competitively again.

Blackpool won 2-1 on the road to a 2nd Wembley final in 3 years, with goals from Mortensen and Mudie. The attendance was 31,190.

27th January 1993 Devon v Royal Navy I cannot find any details for this match, but love how basic the programme is.

Leeds United 0 Newcastle Utd 1

Match ticket from the same match

Match action from the game, the Arsenal keeper punches away from Palace's Peter Simpson, like the background showing on the old Arsenal stand before being rebuilt in the 1930's

32 years ago - 4th Round of the FA Cup.
On a Sunday!
First season this had happened.

Coventry 0 Derby 0
att: 40,885

With it being a Sunday, the laws of the time necessitated the production of a teamsheet with the turnstile price printed on it. Accordingly, I think there are different coloured teamsheets specific to each end of the ground for this match.

The 1963 League Cup semi between Sunderland and Aston Villa beats it (just)
The first leg was played at Roker on 12 January, and the second leg at Villa Park on 22 April

I didn't realise that.
Presumably to do with the backlog of league fixtures due to the harsh winter that year?

27th January 1973

Coventry City 1 Manchester United 1

Att. 42,767

Alderson for Coventry with Jim Holton getting the United goal. Holton would of course go on to play for Coventry later in his career, he passed away aged just 42 following a heart attack at the wheel of his car in 1993

One of my favourite style programmes these probably due to the use of colour and it's magazine style. Hopeless for holding during a game but as I never had to I don't care! Nothing to do with the back covers by the way Smile

Not half!

As a 12 year old, my very first "bargain bundle" from Steve Earl contained a dozen of these Coventry issues and I do recollect being strangely drawn to those back covers**. I didn't understand why, though.

**Except the one with Cilla Black in a fur coat Smile

28th January 1970

FA Cup, 4th Round, replay

Att: 45,980

Crystal Palace 1 (Queen), Tottenham Hotspur 0

Gerry Queen soars above Cyril Knowles to head the winning goal from Cliff Jackson's cross. I believe one or two Spurs players (inc Jimmy Greaves) never played for the club again after this humiliating defeat.
