Sheffield United v Brentford. Christmas Day 1946. The Blades cut the Bees down in a 6-1 victory. 36,156 in attendance. This was to be the last season in the top tier for Brentford. The closest we've been back was last year, in the play offs, and finishing 5th in the Championship.
The team page.

62 years ago. I like Bury's use of "Christmas Day" on the cover rather than the date.
Bury 4 Derby 0

This programme is the most poignant to me in the 1970's
I was at this game as then a 17yr old.
Boxing Day 1977
Manchester City 4 Newcastle United 0 att: 45,811
Tueart 3 Kidd
The great Colin Bell came on at half time after a 2 year battle against injury.
The ovation he got lasted a good 5 minutes I will always remember this game for that reason.
Unfortunately Colin was never quite the same player post injury.

85 years ago (1930/1 season) and a 1st Division fixture between Arsenal and Blackpool.
This was Blackpool’s first ever season in the top flight and they were obviously still finding their feet as Arsenal thumped them by 7 goals to one.
Arsenal had 2 hat-trick heroes in Brain and Jack.
Blackpool’s solitary goal was scored by Carr and the attendance was just over 35,000.
The programme is a 12 page issue full of reading material and with little in the way of adverts.

77 years ago - and the top two in the table meet for the second time in 24 hours following a 2-2 draw at Goodison on the 26th.
Derby 2 (Dave McCulloch, Dally Duncan)
Everton 1 (Billy Cook (pen))
att: 35,683 (highest of the season)
It was Everton who went on to win the league that season, though.

28th December 1946
Football League, Division III South
Att: 15,347
Crystal Palace 1 (Naylor), Mansfield Town 1
Billy Naylor (born Billy Bark but changed name by Deed Poll)
Flyer distributed in this programme and also that of the previous home match v Torquay on 25th December. Match advertised is FA Cup 3rd round tie at Newcastle, to be played on 11th Jan 1947. I have yet to speak to anyone who undertook this 30-hour journey and as time passes, am less likely to do so. With a 6:19 arrival time in Newcastle on the Sat morning, this gave travellers over 8 hours in town before kick-off. I hope they behaved themselves!

Big advert on page 2 for the "Talkie cigarette card" ('it talks! it plays on your gramophone!) featuring "Hughie Gallacher and other famous footballers"
I've never seen any of those for sale anywhere. Ever.
Anyone?

30th December 1972
Old Scottish Div 2
A struggling Brechin City managed a creditable 3-3 draw with St. Mirren who had beaten them 5-1 in the reverse fixture in September 72
A four page programme (all 4 pages can be seen on my Twitter page) with a cover that should perhaps have been in 'The weird world of programme covers' thread that Yachtsmun started recently http://www.footballprogrammecentre.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21970

I had some good programmes to upload over the last couple of days but I was not able to do so.
Now that I have the time I can't find any old or interesting Blackpool programme so here is a 'modern' issue from 2000/1 season.
This is for a postponed fixture against Cardiff City.
The programme is a 40 page issue and this season saw the price hit £2 for the first time.
The programme was used for the rearranged game in February with a single sheet update.

Thanks for the info.
Doesn't state at what rpm these cards needed to be played at.
I wonder if it was 16rpm, which was the pre-war preference for the spoken word. _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |
