"In fog"........was it 1950 that London was hit with some really severe foggy spells? I've got some photos somewhere of Central London taken at 2pm when it looks dark enough to be 2am.
I'd need to check if it was 1950 - might have been a year or two either side of that.

26th November 1962
FA Cup, 2nd round replay
Att: 17,118 (staggering, on a Monday night in Mansfield - maybe they knew what was coming!)
Mansfield Town 7 Crystal Palace 2 (Phillips og, Summersby)
I don't know for sure if he scored for the Stags or not but he was described in the next Palace home programme as "brilliant" - so here's Ken "Pud" Wagstaff (in Hull City kit)

66 years ago - some very creative use of fonts for the time.
Match ended goalless in front of a very impressive crowd of 36,815.

67 years ago and Manchester City welcome the league leaders to Maine Road.
Having started the season unbeaten in their first 16 games, this was a second defeat in three for the Rams
City 2 Derby 1 (Reg Harrison)
att: 42,225
Still top - but now only two points ahead of Pompey and Newcastle.

53 years ago and a reserve fixture from Leyton Orient's only top-flight season.
3-0 victory for the home team.
At the foot, there's advance notification of the competition to decide who would be the "Leyton Orient Supporters Club Queen" for 1962. A later programme reveals that this was won by Miss Rita Romano from Ilford.
No picture, sadly, but her surname suggests a hint of Mediterranean glamour? I wonder if Rita is still around and remembers that night?

30th November 1968
Football League, Division II
Att: 20,751
Crystal Palace 1 (McCormick), Derby County 2 (Carlin, McFarland)
The two promoted clubs - and revenge was sweet for Palace but we'll have to wait till 5th March to witness it!

30th November 1959.
Third Lanark v Blackpool from Cathkin Park for the opening of the floodlights.
I don't appear to have a record of the score for this match. Does anybody know?

The game that sent us top of the league, Pete - and not relinquished even for a day until the season's end! (Not even on March 5th )
Was it a surprise that Palace were promoted that season or was it half expected? _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |

While, as Pete observes, our first XI were doing the business at Selhurst Park, the stiffs were also doing the business against Burnley.
3-0 win, two goals from Barry Butlin and a late strike from perennial reserve full-back John Richardson.
John Richardson

"Was it a surprise that Palace were promoted that season or was it half expected?"
I don't think anyone at Palace expected to be promoted until 4:45 on the final afternoon! Certainly my brother didn't - he got married on the final day so we all missed the game! |

I have this image of you in the church with the cable from the craftily-hidden transistor radio stuck in your earhole, Pete.
"Dearly beloved, we are all gathered here together..."
"YES!!"
"..on this happy day..."
"WE'VE DONE IT!"
"to celebrate the coming together of..."
"PALACE AND THE FIRST DIVISION!" _________________ http://www.flickr.com/photos/derby1884/sets/ |
