Much as I loved the old Ram newspaper, it's hard not to envy Hammers collectors and those pocket-sized issues.
Not just a ton of information on the club but so easy to store!
43 years ago and Kevin Hector scores both goals in a 2-1 win

So very missed. WHU, in their last season at the Boleyn Ground are issuing match day programmes with retro covers. This very season artwork shown here adorned the issue v Norwich on 26th September, so very nostalgic |

85 years ago and one of those "2-in-1" issues that Villa often put out over the years.
The game covered on Nov 19th is for Villa v "The Army F.A. Eleven"
The Army side is mostly made up of Corporals and Lance-Corporals but the two wingers are both Privates. The only ones in the team.
The Army team were also allowed to name two reserves. Unusual for those days.
2.40pm kick-off on a Wednesday afternoon so perhaps there would have been more at the match on the 15th which was against Derby.

Two questions - was Saints' goal-scoring skipper Whittingham related to Guy? And did anyone reading this ever drink a pint of Coopers? |

Same day Pompey were at the Baseball Ground, our reserves were up in the North East.
Home team won 2-1.
oh - and best of luck to the Cobblers in their struggle to survive.
50 years ago, things were a bit different.

21st November 1953
FA Cup, 1st round
Att:- 8,944
Great Yarmouth Town 1 Crystal Palace 0
Palace were knocked out of the Cup in 3 straight years by non-league opposition, and this game at Great Yarmouth was the filling in their sandwich of humiliation. Palace remains GYT's only league scalp and 8,944 their record gate. In the photo below, the hero of the day, the home keeper Canning, fumbles a cross but still denies the lurking Palace forwards Bob Thomas and (right) Ernie Randell. That superb stand still dominates Wellesley Rec.

Peter
Coopers were taken over in 1943 by Watney Coombe & Reid but brewing continued until 1950's.
How come you always put your articles on aftermidnight? |

Aha - became cat's pi## then like the rest of them.
"How come you always put your articles on after midnight?"
If I did them before midnight, they'd be on the wrong day!
Nah, just like to be the first up every day - if I have one to show anyway. |

The 5-2 win here put the Rams top of the Central League - watched by the club's new manager Jack Barker.

40 years ago today.
I guess the front cover is showing Mike Bailey holding aloft the Daily Express 5-a-side trophy which had been played for 17 days earlier.

Cheers Pete, great stuff. That stand at Great Yarmouth is claimed to be the oldest stand in the world.

Bit of an off day for the club all round.
While the first XI were getting hammered 5-1 at Burnden Park, the reserves were losing this match 2-1.
Two points of mention - when the teams took the field, there were no fewer than 11 changes to the lineups printed in the programme.
And Jack Nicholas, Derby's FA Cup-winning skipper, who had basically retired by this time, turned out at the, unusual for him, position of right-half (3 days short of his 36th birthday)
After a couple of emergency appearances for the first team and a few more reserve games to help out, he became the club's chief scout towards the end of the 46/7 season.
Allegedly as hard a player as any who have played the game.
