Post subject: Domestic League of Ireland issues
Reply with quote

The following is a first stab at League of Ireland club programmes and what is known to exist.

I’d appreciate any corrections/additions. Note I am focussing on domestic league and cup games as opposed to one off European and friendly issues.

Note in many cases particularly in earlier years clubs may only start from the shield or first league game. They may also have stopped issuing for games late in the season

Limerick FC issued regularly from 37/8 to 74/75 although I’m only aware of cup issues from 1952/53. Nothing done in 75/76. Issued for the 2nd half of 1976/77. Nothing in 77/78. Issued for opening game of 78/79 v Cork Celtic but none after that. Issued regularly since 79/80.

(Thanks to Finn Harps History for this) Finn Harps have been fairly prolific producers of programmes except for the following seasons:

75/76 Very sporadic season not all games had programmes
76/77 None produced
77/78 None produced
78/79 None produced except Everton in UEFA Cup
79/80 None produced
80/81 None produced bar Athlone Town in FAI Cup
81/82 None produced bar Bohemians in League
82/83 Teamsheets only,
83/84; 84/85 and 85/86 Mixture of programmes and teamsheets
86/87 no programmes initially and then a mixture of programmes and teamsheets.
Since that time most competiive games have been catered for.

Sligo Rovers have been prolific issuers since at least 1938/39.

Dundalk have been prolific issuers since at least 1937/38 and there are at least 1 known issue from 31/32 (Drumcondra March), 32/33 (Shelbourne September) and one mid 30’s I think re Bohemians.
Waterford have issued regularly since 45/46 (well I’ve only ever seen Limerick 45/6 but assume others were done) except maybe not in 78/79. An image of a 1930 Waterford programme appeared in a 1950’s programme. I’ve never seen a prewar Waterford programme nor know of any extant issues.

Derry City have issued regularly since joining the League of Ireland in 1985/86.

Monaghan United issued regularly from 1985/86 until their demise.

Longford Town issued regularly from 84/85.

Newcastlewest issued from 85/86 until their demise although more sporadic at the end.

Thurles Town issued regularly from 77/8-81/82.

Galway Rovers/United issued regularly from 77/8 to date.

Mervue issued regularly in the league

Salthill Devon issued regularly in the league

EMFA/Kilkeeny City issued regularly in the league

Wexford Youths issued regularly in the league

Drogheda issued pre-league in 62/63 and from 63/64 reasonably regularly until 73/74. I don’t think they issued from 74/75-78/79 inclusive. Regular issues since.

Kildare County issued regularly while in the league

Bray Unknowns – I’m not aware for certain of any extant Bray Unknowns programmes however I am sure they produced programmes.

Bray Wanderers issued regularly from 85/86.

Cobh Ramblers issued regularly from 85/86

Athlone Town issued from 69/70-73/74 – sporadic issues up to mid 80’s. not sure when regular programmes started in mid 80’s.

Fordsons – only known extant Fordsons programme is for a friendly v Kilmarnock in 1928.

Cork FC issued in 30/31 and in 37/38.

Cork Bohemians – I once saw a Cork Bohs programme for a testimonial. No idea if league issues done.

Cork City (1938) issued regularly until their demise midway through 39/40.

Cork United (1940) issued regularly until their demise in 1948

Cork Athletic – appear to have issued regularly until their demise in 1957.

Evergreen issued regularly from 1951/52 to 58/59

Cork Hibs issued regularly in 57/58 and some until 62/63. Probably only for FAI Cup ties until 1970. Sporadic variety of issues until 73/74. Nothing known for 74/75 & 75/76.

Cork Celtic issued for 59/60,60/61 & 61/62. After that cup ties and odd sporadic derby issues until a few issues in late 76/77 and early 77/78.

Albert Rovers – issued in 76/77

Cork Albert(s) have seen issues for 77/78 and 78/79.

Cork United (1979) issued regularly for a period in 80/81 season only. Did not issue in 79/80 or 81/82.

Cork City (1984) have issued regularly since 1984.

St. James’s Gate issued from 38/39 to 42/43. They issued regularly when they rejoined the league in 1990 until their demise.

Drumcondra issued regularly from 39/40 until 71/72. Nothing known for 72/73.

Brideville issued a regular numbered programme in 38/39. Nothing known for other seasons.

Transport issued regularly in 48/49 and probably just for cup games until 53/54. Regular issues were done for 53/54 & 54/55. I’m not aware of any later issues.

Home Farm – issued in 78/79 and up to 80/81. Sporadic issues after that. Regular issues in later years. Need help here.

St. Patricks Athletic issued v Shelbourne in 51/52 possibly for others. Cup games only then until regular issues in 54/55 & 55/56. A couple of odd issues up to Shamrock Rovers 59/60 then nothing until a few issues in 68/69. Again occasional issues until early 1980’s.

Bohemians issued regularly from 38/39-53/54. No issues until 66/67. Regular from 66/67-71/72. They appear to have stopped then until 76/77 and regular issues since.

Shelbourne issued v Bohemians in 37/38 and regularly from 39/40 (not sure re 50/51) until 57/58. No regular issues and maybe no domestic issues until 78/79. Reasonably regular since. Maybe not in some of the 80’s seasons can’t recall.

Shamrock Rovers regularly from 38/39 until 49/50. Sporadic issues in early 50’s to 53/54. Regular issues 54/55-61/62. Nothing from 62/63-64/65. A few issues in 65/66. 66/67 cup v Shelbourne only. Nothing for 67/68-69/70. Waterford league, Cork Celtic and Drogheda cup from 70/71. Nothing in 71/72. Regular issues for 72/73. Gestetnered sheets for a time circa 1976. Regular programmes since 77/78.

Dublin City – issued regularly while in the league

UCD regular programme since joining the league in 79/80.

Cabinteely regular programme since joining the league in 2015.

Dolphin - Only extant Dolphin programmes are for friendlies v Rangers and Notts County. Not known if they issued for domestic games.

Only extant known Reds United programme is for a cup tie v Bohemians in 1935.

No known issues for the following clubs while in the league Dublin Utd, Frankfort,Jacobs,Olimpia,YMCA Shelbourne Utd,Pioneers,Midland Athletic,Rathmines Ath, Brooklyn

Great stuff, thanks Gary.

(I'll review my notes but I doubt I'll be adding anything significant.)

Tremendous piece of research Gary and will no doubt be invaluable for League of Ireland collectors.

It doesn't help with my collecting sphere but anyone providing that level of information for fellow collectors has to be applauded. Clap

SPORTING FINGAL produced regularly for the duration of their time in the league 2008-2010
ST FRANCIS League members 96-7 to 00-1. Certainly issued in 99-00 and 00-1 (and probably all seasons)

SHAMROCK ROVERS:
I believe only one programme produced in 1953-54, the title decider v Evergreen
I think only one programme produced in 1987-88 season v Derry City (first season in Tolka Park after move from Milltown, and games being boycotted)
SHAMROCK ROVERS B (2014): All games covered in double and triple issue first team programmes (except one game v Waterford)

SHELBOURNE
I believe Shelbourne failed to produce for the second half of 2006 from July when they owed their printers (and everyone else) a load of money!

UCD:
details cut and paste from another source (and I've lost track of who “me” is below!):
1979-1981 The programme was edited by Fintan Drury and some other people. Fintan was in the first team squad in 1979-80 and scored 2 goals in 37 League game over the next two seasons.
1981/82 A team sheet was produced for League games with only 1 program produced for the Q/Final of the FAI Cup V Bohs which we lost 1-2.
1982/83 a little fold up booklet was produced.
1983/84 Brendan Dillon who was then superleague secretary was the editor and programmes were produced on about 8 occasions during the season.
1984/85 a team sheet was produced for most games and a few programmes for the remainder.
1985/86 Programmes for all home games.
1986/87 A Club newsletter was produced for each home game. Like a teamsheet only with some items of club news.
1987/88 A teamsheet.
1988/89 Programmes
1989/90 Programmes.
1990/91 Booklet for the season with inserts for each game. Myself and Brendan Dillon were the main contributors to the inserts.
1991-95 Teamsheets mostly produced with programmes on occasion.
1995/96 A Programme was produced written by me and edited by a man who was responsible for publishing Rugby magazines.. Paul Maher.
1996/97 Myself and Michael Hayes.. now with the Eircom League compiled the programme
1997/99 Teamsheet produced
1999/2001 Two seasons programmes every game edited by me.
2001/2002 Colour program produced by the committee scrapped after losing money.
2002/2003.. Club produced cheap 8 page program with colour cover given away free with ticket for attendance.
2003/2004 Two seasons programme produced by STIG team.. always lots to read in it.
2005 The colour production you see this season.

SPORADIC ISSUES
I have Bohs v Dundalk 73-4 FAI Cup but don't know if that was the only issue that season
I had a Cork Hibs v St Pats 62-3 FAI Cup programme, Hibs v Dundalk 62-3 exists too. They issues v Dundalk and Drogheda (at least) in 63-4
I have St Pats v Dundalk 79-80
For Home Farm I just have a few issues from these seasons: 79-80, 99-00, 00-1

Thanks Sean

yes pretty certain Evergreen 53/4 is the only Rovers home from that season. Effective title decider late in the season and a famous title win for "Coad's Colts." Evergreen never won the title as Evergreen but did as Cork Celtic in 73/74.

Your Cork Hibs info is correct they stopped issuing later than I thought.

St Pats v Dundalk 79/80 was their only issue that season. We played them 2 weeks later (my first visit to Richmond Park) and definitely nothing done. They said at the time Dundalk was a "one off" Quite hard to get too.

I knew I'd forgotten clubs thanks for Sporting Fingal and St. Francis. Francis issued pre-league for a season as well.

A minor update on Athlone in the 80s. They played Dundalk in the FAI Cup in 84-5 and 85-6. The 84-5 programme 8-Mar-85 states that it was the only programme of the season, and the 85-6 FAI Cup programme 2-Feb-86 states that it was the first since the previous season's cup game (and seems likely to have been the only programme that season)

I don't honestly know at this stage, it could be.

Great season all round, with Dundalk doing the double and Harps promoted. Easy

Not so good for our resident Limerick fan, sadly. Crying or Very sad

Total disaster for Limerick losing in the playoffs having made such a great run to reach them.

Re UCD I think there is one person that avidly collects them and is an expert on them so I assume he is the source of the info.

Yes good season for you Sean...

Commiserations Gary, I know what you are going through. I am just glad Harps have got out of the First Division for at least a season. That is a soul destroying League.

Can anyone help me trying to find out if programmes were printed for the following games
1979-80 FAI Cup 4th Round Replay Home Farm v Cobh Ramblers
1974-75 FAI Cup Preliminary Round Drogheda v Cobh Ramblers

Will start with these and come back with the older Ramblers FAI programmes.

Any help greatly appreciated (any programmes ecstatically appreciated)
Smile

I cannot help with the programme but Home Farm definitely exists. I would think it is pretty much certain nothing was done in Drogheda. I'm not aware of any Drogheda issues from 74/75 to 78/79 inclusive.

Thanks Gary.
In reference to the following in your opinion what can I write off, all FAI Cup matches

37-38 Distillery Dublin v Cobh R
38-39 Cobh R v Cork Bohs
39-40 Sligo v Cobh R (going by your original list there may have been one)
47-48 Cobh R v St Pats
53-54 Drumcondra v Cobh R (possibility)
57-58 Sligo v Cobh R ( think there may have been one, from a Sligo source)
58-59 Cobh R v Drumcondra
62-63 Transport v Cobh R (probably not)

Pats 48 and Drumcondra 59 definitely exist. I have both but not the Pats one to hand or a photo.

I'm not aware of any of the others.

Both games in Sligo are certainly strong candidates. Drumcondra did issue during 53/54 so also possible. They probably only issued for some games that season though. Definitely nothing known for the others and unlikely to appear now.

I don't know if Distillery (the Dublin club) ever produced a programme.
