66 years ago today 1949 Sheffield United 1-1 QPR

With Hagan, Collindridge and Fred Smith unavailable, United fielded three inexperienced forwards, 20 year old debutant Gordon Williams, and two 19 year olds George Hutchinson and Arthur Bottom. Hutchinson scored early, but Rangers levelled on the stroke of half time. United's frustration began to grow as Rangers keeper Allen produced a couple of great saves to deny United. By the final whistle, the crowd voiced their displeasure by chanting 'We want Jimmy'.

The local press were very scathing with that evening's Green Un branding the players 'pathetic' with no technical skill. So 66 years .....and nothing's changed Laughing

1959..........

Pompey away to Huddersfield, nice 18 page programme, price 3d.

There's a full page ad for 'Hammonds good yorkshire ale'.......

No doubt a few were knocked back after this game......

4 page programme - the home team were midtable in the Spartan League Div.1 (Western).

Only programme I've seen with an advert for a "seedsman and floral artist"....who specialised in "wreaths at short notice"!

"Chingford" - I really like that name....sounds like it should be grouped along with Camberwick Green, Trumpton and Chigley (for those who remember those legendary conurbations of yore)

Note the price of admission - at 1/6d it's the price of 6 x3d programmes.
Apply the same to today and you get 6 x £3 = £18.
Not too far off the mark.

Some interesting comments about possibly City's first-ever overseas player. Did he make any other appearances, I wonder?

53 years ago, 1962 Southport v York City.

Southport must have been hoping for a change of fortune, the previous 7 games they had shipped 30 goals including a 6-1 and 7-1 defeats, they did put four past Torquay but drew 4-4 Laughing

The half time raffle was offering 2 tickets to a local cinema to see a choice of films to which I confess in my ignorance I'd never heard of any of them.

The old man had a half page advert, although I never realised, and I don't think he did was knocking out agricultural blades in Lancashire.

Southport won 2-1

59 years ago and a 4 page issue for Hornchurch & Upminster v Berkhamsted Town.

Thre are so many tiny advertisements in this one that the programme itself could double up as a retail directory of the area.

On the back page, the "personality spot" introduces new signing Derek Stittle who is described as covering a lot of ground during the game due to "his short, mincing trot".

He is also the only player in the squad who turns out for the match wearing contact lenses. And he likes woodwork. And he works as a GPO engineer. And he's married and enjoys doing the dishes.

I expect his wife told him to say that...

71 years ago today 1944 United v Doncaster.

4 page programme featuring a cover advert for the Cheerio Razor blade, a favourite of United supporters with suicidal tendencies. There's a lot of us.
