Friday 3rd August - my 2012 Olympic odyssey continued and I got myself tickets for the opening day of athletics, both morning & evening sessions) in the Olympic Stadium.

My Travelcard

My morning ticket

My programme (oh my word, was it worth the fiver!)

I took my seat and the Men's Shot Put kicked it all off, the opening event. Then came the girls for the Heptathlon 100m hurdles and Katarina Johnson-Thompson was in one of the heats, running well. But in the last heat out came the Poster Girl and cover girl above, the lovely Jessica Ennis. The roof lifted off, an explosion from the 80,000 crowd.

"On your marks, get set"............

My seat was handily placed for this shot!

And Jessica broke the British 100m hurdles record with 12.54 sec. She was on her way to a fantastic Gold Medal and the hearts of the nation. A star was born.

Opening match of the 86/7 Highland League season - Forres Mechanics v Huntly.

I was there but had to leave at half-time to attend a family function - so if anyone knows the final score, please let me know!

When Arsenal lifted the trophy at Wembley last week, 48 years earlier Manchester United contested the shield[Charity then, Community now] as the first game of the season at Old Trafford against Tottenham Hotspur as it will be tomorrow except the competition is different, but these two clubs have never had a 0-0 to my knowledge, well not Post War I do not think!.

For anyone who is a little unaware the League Champions always played the FA Cup Winners at the home of the Champions before it all got switched to Wemberley.

This match ended 3-3 and both teams shared the Charity Shield for 6 months despite Denis Law and Dave Mackay wanting to rip each others throats out!

Programme from Aberdeen's 4-1 win over Zalgiris Vilnius, August 1996. The 2nd leg at Pittodrie was my first European game and Aberdeen lost 3-1 in one of their most embarrassing European defeats. The goalkeepers seemed to have donned low quality 80's jumpers for the team photo.

You're making me feel very old, Aberdeen Bob!
My first European game at Pittodrie was the Juventus tie - 1972?

Remember asking my Dad why the Aberdeen players could never get hold of the ball Smile

I went to all the European games between about 1974 and 1985 - shame you couldn't have been there for the Bayern Munich semi-final.

I'm no fan (obviously) but I was in the Beach End that night and the place was absolutely rocking!

Glentoran v Manchester United XI, 8th August 2007.

Glentoran 125th anniversary.

Top prize for identifying the Glentoran player on the far left in the same fixture from 1982 shown on the cover.

Sat 9th August 1969

Much like AFC Bournemouth yesterday, Palace made their top flight debut on this day 46 years ago, after 3 promotions in 9 seasons, hosting Manchester United in front of a then record gate of 48,610. This programme cover was designed by a fan in a competition.

The result was a 2:2 draw, goals from Mel Blyth, Bobby Charlton, Gerry Queen and finally Willie Morgan.

United's 9, 10 and 11 were Charlton, Law, and Best. Palace's were Cliff Jackson, Queen and Blyth.

There were 40 minutes of highlights on MOTD, hosted by Frank "Sniffer" Bough, with very interesting commentary by Barry Davies. In the MOTD studio afterwards Roger Hynd and Gerry Queen were grilled about the game and their hopes & expectations on their first day in English football. Hynd's contribution was priceless, saying it had taken him the whole of the first half to get up to speed with the English game after a career in Scotland. At least, I think that's what he said as there were no sub-titles in 1969.

John Jackson turns a George Best shot round the post. I met John McCormick a few years ago and asked him to sign this photo. "Did Denis Law score? If he did, I'm not signing". He signed. Lovely bloke.

Twenty years ago, Everton sent a squad including Daniel Amokachi to Booth Street, Congleton for a pre season friendly.

At the same time Crystal Palace were being held to a draw on their big day, it was also their promotion colleagues Derby's return to the big time after 16 years away.
The cover featured the newly-built Ley Stand (though a photograph might have been more in keeping?) - but with the goalkeeper (who may or may not be Les Green) facing the wrong way!
Goalless draw in front of a surprisingly low attendance of 29,451.

After 5 issues, the club reverted to incorporating a photograph on the front cover.

Friday 10th August 2012

More from my Olympic adventure, the penultimate night of athletics in the stadium and I won the tickets in the lottery a year before. Highlight of the night was a brilliant gold medal by the French pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie who jumped 5m 97cm to win by 6 cm from a couple of Germans. Britain's Steve Lewis finished fifth on 5m 75cm. Lewis is pictured below.

My travelcard

My Ticket

My programme

And a final goodnight to the wonderful stadium, soon to be home of West Ham Utd, at our expense.
