Over the last few weeks a number of pre season trial match for pompey have been on e bay.

but look at the price difference.....

46/47 £11-61

48/49 £41-00

49/50 £75-00

I can only assume, the championship seasons make them more collectable !!!!

You wouldn't think there would be that much difference between Championship winning seasons and other seasons for trial programmes.

After all if Pompey trial programmes are anything like Blackpool's they are relatively scarce.

But £11.61 for a 46/7 one - that's a steal.

A Blackpool one from that season would normally command 3 figures.

Just picked up the 50/1 Plymouth Practice match on ebay and cost me £155!!

madness...

By way of recouping there is a Cambridge University v Royal Navy match played at Pompey late 40's currently a bargain at £24.99 Smile

These sort of matches must be a southern thing. I know of no Hearts programme for such a match, and I can’t recall ever seeing one for any Scottish club.

I can’t even recall reading about Hearts playing these sort of trial games, if they did perhaps it was closed door.

I’m sure someone out there can prove me wrong!

Can,t go back any further than 33/34

Just think the cost of the programme was 1d, the same as 1946 prog.

Pete, did you note the other price differences regarding the following two items?

Press cutting depicting the Pompey championship team in the changing room with the throphy.......signed by seven players £91

Championship team press photograph with a signed team autograph page £30

Amazed at the difference in price........but happy with my "cheaper" purchase!

Alas so

Here are some Manchester United "public practise matches" or "trial games" from 1939 to 1960. There was not anything produced for 1946-7, 1957-8, 1958-9 ,1959-60 because the team started to go on Pre-Season Tours late 1950's but there was a game in 1946-7 but no programme issued[game played at a bombed out Old Trafford] and I have included an image of one of the first team before that game was played in 1946-7].

The last known programme was for 1960-1.
There is also another original press photo of another team from the mid 1950's.

Just click on any images to download for free.

A 2 sided single sheet Practice Match from Barnsley 1949-50 with kick offs at 2.00 and 3.00 at a time when they could field four teams, plus 6 reserves.

No 8 for the "A" team was Tommy Taylor - future Manchester United and England star.

I have a Palace one, Whites v Colours, dated 12th August 1950, but I can't find it. It's driving me Mad

Meantime I have this photo of a trial game at Charlton, Reds v Whites, probably pre-war as no shirt numbers on their backs but could be a bit later as maybe shirt numbers weren't as relevant then so perhaps hadn't been sewn on in time for this trial - whenever it was played.

The keeper is Sid Hobbins, who played for the Addicks pre-war and up to 1948 when he joined Millwall. Later in life he founded Welling Utd. and the family connection there continues as his grandson Barry is now running them.

That's a great photo, Pete.

That terracing at the Valley makes for a great backdrop - and somehow all the more interesting when its sparsely populated.

If you have any more showing that terracing, please let me know!

Derby tended to use the same design as reserve team issues for their equivalent.

Interesting kick-off time
