Somebody told me about a year back that Dudley Town has three collectors who are major hitters when it comes to programmes, so anything that's a bit left field, ends up in a bidding war, such as these examples....

...is that the sound of Barry's feet as he scurries off to inspect the letter 'D' in his warehouse????

Puzzling - why a conurbation the size of Dudley (the largest in England without a league club?) doesn't even have a "major" non-league club.

Is it rugby country? Are the locals averse to sport?

Dudley Town had ground issues and become a little nomadic, even they were badly supported between 150 & 200 during the 96/97 season when they folded.

A reformed club again in 1997 had the same issues, playing all over the West Midlands

Anyone interested in the fixture that was auctioned, Tamuff won 5-0

According to the Guardian, the answer is Croydon:

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2003/may/29/theknowledge.sport

because Crystal Palace don't play there (technically speaking).

Still doesn't answer why Dudley is so bereft - it's not as if it's a "new town" like Milton Keynes.

There must be an answer.

I suppose it's because historically huge clubs, Villa, Wolves and West Brom are just down the road and, modern day, there's a large Asian community for whom cricket is the main sport

We have a similar scenario in my neck of the woods - St Helens.

With a population of over 100,000 there is massive interest in football with Liverpool, Everton and Utd all well supported. The main sporting interest in the town however is the highly successful Rugby League team. St Helens Town FC hardly get a look in and are currently languishing in the North West Counties League. They did however reach Wembley in 1987 winning the FA Vase at the first attempt. The rugby team also reached Wembley that year (embarrassingly) which leads me to another question....

Which other towns have had their football and rugby teams both at Wembley in the same year? (I can think of at least 2) Smile

Leeds and Wigan?

Take your point about St.Helens - but Dudley doesn't seem to be a stronghold of any other sport.

It's a real oddity!

I looked to me that Tamworth was the factor in those programme sales, not Dudley. Both items featured Tamworth and only one of them Dudley.

Which poses the question, what is the Tamworth collector factor? Sherlock

Yes, 1972 and 2013 respectively. Thumbs Up

I'm sure that with all these semis and play off games there must be others?!

Iirc Wigan also did it in 1985 in the Associate Members Cup or whatever it was called at the time.
